Leon's Story
Life
Graduated HS 1966, attended Emory University 1966-69, left without graduating. Got married, had a son in 1972. Returned to college to finish a BA in 1975. Enlisted in the Navy in 1975, retired from the Navy in 1999, and went to work for Franklin Covey in Houston, TX. Wife died in January 2000 (sigh). Moved to Dallas in September 2000, just in time for granddaughter's birth there. Wow. Met future second wife New Year's Eve 2000, fell madly in love, engaged by Valentine's Day 2001, married June 2001. Double wow. Laid off just before that wedding, unemployed for a year. Got a job as a legal assistant, and now I just finished law school (evening classes), studying for the bar exam, and gonna be a lawyer at 59. For anyone who knew me in high school, the only surprise is how long it took me to find my way back to law school. reat philosopher, Jerry Garcia, put it: "What a long, strange trip it's been."
[Update, 1/09] Passed the bar exam, and "jumped in the deep end"; opened a practice with a classmate. As of November 2008, Johnson Li LLP is one of the newest law firms in the Dallas area. Scary, but clients are beginning to appear, and I'm having the time of my life.
(Update on the update, 4/09) Partnership didn't work out, now working as a solo practitioner, still having great fun!
(Update 8/10) The solo gig just wasn't quite making ends meet, so now I'm an associate attorney with a great family-law attorney, still doing exactly what I wanted to do in terms of my areas of practice, and still having fun. Oh, yes, and there's a third granddaughter out in San Francisco now, born this summer. Wow.
(Update 2020) Still doing family law, still having fun doing it. Slowed down a little on bicycling, but a new hip next month will have me "back in the saddle again." Still amazed at my good fortune(s).
