Leonard A.'s Story

I entered G.N.S.H.S. on the day it opened as a brand new school. .I am most likely the first student to have transferred OUT of South High School. My stepdad was stationed at Mitchell Field and we were sent to Istanbul, Turkey for three years just before Thanksgiving of 1958. Talk about a culture shock! It was like stepping back in time 50 years! There were only 17 high school aged kids in Istanbul, not enough for a school, so we were all sent to the American high school in Wiesbaden, Germany. There I enjoyed playing football running track and singing in the chorus. I also had a part in the senior class play. .As a dorm resident we were taken on numerous trips during Thanksgiving , spring breaks and long weekends.. We were blessed to have had so many good times, I wonder how much we really appreciated it . .. I may have been among the first people to suggest the name REBELS for Souths teams. Anyway . during the first quarter at one of the early away games,, I figured since we were South High & the rebels fought for the south, I yelled out Go Rebels a couple of times . . A pretty girl sitting next to me picked up on it and yelled it out a couple of times also. The next thing I knew the cheerleaders huddled up then started with Lets Go Rebels! I guess saying go south and go team must have seemed a little lame. I am now happily retired in North Carolina keeping up with the grandchildren and working with Boy Scouts. Like most of us now in our "Golden " years ,I have gained a couple of ounces HA! . I have now been married to my sweet wife for 57 years .. I have had a good and very rewarding life and am grateful for the many opportunities and blessings that I have been fortunate enough to have received over the years.. I wish for good health & happiness for all of my former classmates from both schools.
