Leroy's Story
Life
Since high school I have been devoted time to studying violin, and jazz guitar and piano at Grambling State. I became an official pro musician in 1978. I did 5 years in the Guard. I married in 1982 and now have 4 children. I work at GSU as a Humanities and Guitar Instructor, local church musician, and freelance as a studio musician/producer. I am on 2 major recently released CDs with The Polyphonics, and Johnathan Williams.
College
Majoring in music education was an experience in it self. Dunbar Hall was the place for studying under the music curriculum and creating your own thing. During those 4 1/2 years I met some of the best instrumentalists, singers and arrangers from all over the U.S. With them, I performed in several ensembles including orchestra, string ensemble (on my major instrument-violin), jazz ensemble (guitar, bass, piano), and symphonic band (trumpet, electric bass). Though I performed in college groups like Leech & the Gang and Collector's Item, my best experince was being in the pit band for the musical "Purlie". I did student teaching at Southwood High in Shreveport under the late Leon Anderson. In the Spring of 1980, I did my senior recital and graduated with the largest class of music education majors ever at GSU. I also met my wife to be, the former Gurtie Osborne, whom I married 2 years later.

ar in college in '79, I did work elsewhere. Listed as follows: Dormitory Counselor at GSU, 1980-81; Substitue teacher in Lincoln and Caddo Parishes, 1981-83; Orchestra Teacher in Bastrop Area, 1984-86; Admissions Rep. for LA Business College 1988; and Instructor of Humanities and Music and now Jazz Ensmble, Jazz Studies and Guitar at GSU. Musicwise, various churches in Rayville, Shreveport, Monroe, Grambling and Ruston; Studio gigs in New York, Los Angeles, Shreveport, Atlanta, and Monroe; I also was part of backup bands for 50's and 60's revival groups. I recently produced local artist Johnathan Williams CD project, and will be producing some Jazz and Religious artists soon.
Military
I enlisted in the National Guard where I was stationed at Bossier City, LA with the 156th Army Band as a Trumpet and Piano Specialist. My boot camp experience was at Fort McClelland in Anniston, AL, the summer of '79 where I made the mistake of 'volunteering' to help the 208 troops of Echo Company keep time in marching. They gave me a bass drum to not only beat, but to run, eat and sleep with. I was nicked named "Big Man" by Drill Sergeant Blackwell though I did lose about 50 pounds during that cycle. Two interesting places I went to for Annual Traning: Norfolk/Virginia Beach and West Point in New York. At West Point, I learned about the some of the political ramifications about earning rank and respect in your unit as well as some of things the musicians had do to futher their studies. I resigned in 1984 after 5 years.
