When he was 5, he sang featured solos in local musical revues, at age 8 he studied classical piano for 5 years with Anna Holman, and was selected for New Jersey All-State Chorus in both elementary and high school. He received a full scholarship to study at Dalcroze School of Music at the City Center of Arts and Culture while holding down a daytime corporate job in New York City, and taught private piano students. Drafted into the Army at 21, Roy declined a commission from Officers Training School to attend and graduate from the United States Army Band School at Fort Knox, and served with the 25th "Tropic Lightning" Infantry Division Band in Korea. Accompanying such singing stars as Eddie Fisher and Francis Langford, he produced and directed live weekly broadcasts for the Armed Forces Radio Network, featuring his vocal-instrumental trio the "Lightning Bugs". Some of the winners have gone on to professional performing careers, including: Pianist Lee Shapiro, touring world wide for 7 years as music director, arranger and keyboardist with Frankie Valle and the Four Seasons; Trumpeter Roy Hynes, played in the pit band for the 17 year run of "Cats" on B'way.; Vocalist Christiane Noll, debuted as lead in B'way. musical "Jekyll and Hyde" for opening 2 year run; Vocalist Matt Scott, understudy many years for the Frankie Valle part in the B'way. musical "Jersey Boys"; etc. etc. The Swingers have successfully completed 3 European concert tours as Friendship Ambassadors, including England, Scotland, Wales, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, as well as 3 weeks in Romania when it was a Communist country. Taking early retirement from his job as a television advertising executive after 38 years with General Foods Corporation to devote more time to his music, Roy has played the Steinway at Nordstrom, Paramus, since opening day in 1990, where he served as the store's Music Director for 17 years. In 2003, he produced his 1st solo piano CD "My shining Hour" to share with close friends, family members, and all of his devoted fans, which has since been featured by Jazz radio stations across the country.
