Les's Story
Enjoyed thirty years in the Air Force as an airman, NCO and officer. After College and OTS, I spent the rest of my AF career as an Air Defense Weapon's Controller and numbered AF Staff Planner. Spent a lot of time on mountain tops and back ending in AWAC's and Navy E2C's. Special side trips were taken to sand dunes in the Middle East and those Agent Orange soaked paddies south of Saigon. Then there was that frozen mountain over looking the DMZ, some really ugly trips into East Berlin being harassed by the Stazi, and on a high note, briefing HRH (Kent) at England's RAF Neatishead! For fun, there was any left bank bar in Paris, Barcelona in the spring, Venice in the fall, Palma anytime, eating raw oysters fresh from Apalachicola Bay, back seating in an F-15D and the special opportunity to be grilled in Congress, when the Cuban MIG landed "undetected" at Homestead. Thank's CIA...anything to make you guy's look good.

My favorite 9th AF "Bad-time" memory was that cold March day in Egypt, when in the middle of a sand storm, it started snowing red mud flakes! It just didn't get any better than that... Favorite "Good-time" memory was sleeping rough on the Yemen border and being awakened by the light of a gazillion stars! But, best of all was the moment when we graduated our first AFROTC Class at Alabama's Livingston University! Great men and women all, with many still in the AF!

And for all those who did not make it back from Viet Nam and for all those that did, at least we stood for each other and played by the stupid rules. You "gotta" respect that! Lastly, Xin Loi Lt. Taon! I am so deeply sorry that America failed you, your family and your country. But, I know that you gave them a "hard time" before you got your "reeducation" diploma...

Got a BA degree in History from Fairmont State, two years post graduate studies in Education at Auburn and a MPA (Master's in Public Administration) from USC. With that and four dollars, you can get a cup of coffee at Starbucks... but it was fun.

Married (1959) to Sallie, a very special Dietitian from U. Mass. We have three sons, three lovely daughters-in-law and four very lovely grand children, Julia, Elizabeth, Brendan and his Brother "Mini" Cooper. How great is that?
Sallie and I still live in SC. Sadly, the NC farm is no more. The 26 acres just got to be too much for Sallie. She was so great with that JD Tractor! I still donate an ever increasing number of samples to the VA and all with my special thank's to Uncle LBJ! When not with the Grand Children and restoring Argus Cameras, I work on my curmudgeonly skills, nature photography and Civil War history. I love to return to West Virginia and visit those smiling faces and beautiful places, it will always be home for me.
