Leslie's Story

After high school, I went to Westmont College in Santa Barbara. Sun, school, and surf (-ers)--what more could a girl want? :) I majored in psychology, graduated in 1992 and came home, leaving behind lots of CA friends and a pretty cool lifestyle. SB is definitely a magical place and still feels like a 2nd home to me after all these years. After working for a few years, I decided it was time to go back for a graduate degree, took 40 English credits @ UW and was accepted into Seattle University's MIT program (Master-In-Teaching). I never thought I wanted to be a teacher until Lisa Christensen deVera told me she was looking into it; for some reason, it piqued my interest, and I began researching programs, finding that SU was one of the best and most respected in our community. I've been teaching junior high English since the fall of '96 in the Lake Washington School District (currently Redmond Junior High). After a personal tragedy in early 1999, I thought about what other opportunities might be available to me. After meeting some pretty cool people in Mazatlan on a family vacat...Expand for more
ion, I decided to take a leave of absence from my district and went to live/teach down there for two years! It was awesome, living in a foreign county and experiencing Mexico's rich culture. I lived in a condo on the beach, with a pool & weekly maid service, for $300/month. Believe it or not, though, it was sometimes hard to make ends meet (I guess that's what happens when you keep asking for more margaritas. Heehee...) I was so fortunate to start/continue a relationship with a guy I met while there on my family vacation. We both came back in '02, me for good and him for 6 months on a tourist Visa, got engaged in '03, and married at U. Pres. in '04. We now have our first home in the Finn Hill neighborhood of Kirkland/Bothell and a beautiful 5-month old baby boy, Christian, who has totally changed our lives! We visit Mexico when we are able as my husband's entire family lives there, but it doesn't seem often enough. I am really looking forward to catching up with many of you NH '88-ers this fall at our reunion, most likely in September or October. Put it on your calendars!!!
