Lia's Story

Life Where has the time gone since 1987? It's flown! Here's what's happened to me since then, in a nutshell: I went to SUNY Purchase and got a BA in English. I worked in publishing, then moved on to a job at NYU while I pursued an MA in Elementary Education. I worked as a teacher for a few years, and after I moved to TN I worked for Vanderbilt University in the Peabody Center for Education Policy. I got my Tennessee teaching license once I settled in here, and taught at a great school for a bit. Now I'm a stay at home mom, though I'm also a forensics coach and drama club director at a super school. Somewhere in there I dated a few nice guys, and also saw a few real jerks. However, I finally found one that was just right for me, and we got married a little over six years ago. I lived in New Jersey for some years after graduation, then moved to New York State, then NYC, then New York State again, then New Jersey again...and now I live near Nashville, Tennessee, having moved here because my husband's job transferred him to this location. It's really cool living in the state from which my grandmother hailed. I could keep rambling on and on, but I shan't; if you want more details, check the other bios, or drop me a line! School Since they asked about crushes, I should tell, but I won't. However, I think the main guy in question actually knew it at the time, so...not that it mattered! I don't think he particularly cared much if he did know. To put it bluntly: it was tough being an avant-garde alternative-type chick at RHS, let me tell you! Ironically enough, one of the teachers whom I really liked oversaw the one class I had with the afore-mentioned crush. Ms. Leek taught that particular English elective: Short Story. It was a cool class, and I think I managed to become a fairly decent writer as a result (despite the distraction I experienced). I also remember Miss Crivelli with fondness and respect; she really knew her Art History, and she was tough but humorous. I remember this one time when she started laughing hysterically at a slide she was showing us, which featured a Madonna and child surrounded by flowers. Given her strictness, we were shocked! It turned out that ...Expand for more
the painting reminded her of a time that she visited a villa in Italy, where some prankster had inserted blooms into the buttocks of all the stone cherubs carved into a stairway. Speaking of strictness, I also recall Ms. McCane. I still can hear her stating that she didn't want us to put our feet up on the rungs of the desks, as she didn't need to see a "rusty-dusty"; I also still know how to say good-bye in Swahili! College I went to SUNY Purchase for my undergrad years, and there I met the four women who would become my best friends in life: Daria, Jenn, Marina, and Michelle. We had some adventures, let me tell you, and we got into some scrapes, and we did some really silly stuff. It was all good fun, but I won't relate it here; it's between us girls! I really loved college, though; much more than high school, to be honest! (Sorry, RHS!) I ended up majoring in English, and enjoyed exploring poetry and the works of Shakespeare. I did my senior thesis on Ophelia, and I still write poetry. I also performed in some plays whilst there, something I'd started in high school. In addition, I was in an a capella group and a choir. (I love singing and always will.) On a final note, the cafeteria food was abyssmal! Even the ramen noodles we constantly ate (where else can you get a meal for 33 cents?) were better! Workplace I'm not into the whole career thing! As long as I can express myself creatively in my personal life, my job doesn't matter to much to me, provided that I can be around kind people and be free of stress. However, there are two things to note: at some of my jobs I've met great friends, and I'm really proud of one of the things I've done. First of all, I met my friends Andrew and Vashti when I worked at a bookstore, and they are amazing folk; I got to know and love Annye Camara, for whom I worked at Workman Publishing; and I met my friend Kathleen when I worked at NYU, and she is a simply wonderful person. Second, I am honored to have been in the teaching profession. It was super to work with kids, and it was very rewarding. I taught second grade for two years and fourth grade for one before I moved. My fourth grade classroom was decorated to look like Hogwarts!
