Libby's Story

In 2003 God called me to work with persons with dsabilites as a therapeutic riding instructor. While I had never heard of therapeutic riding His message was clear and I began as a volunteer. I am now the director and lead instructor for Therapeion Therapeutic Riding Center, located in Brookston, IN, just north of West Lafayette. You can find our web site if you search on Therapeion Therapeutic Riding Center. We started in 2007 and are celebrating our fifth birthday this year. We currently offer programs for persons with disabilities, youth working on life skills, and children who have been abused or neglected. Future programs include a program for wounded vets, a program for battered women in recovery, and a school literacy program, among others. My husband, Dennis, and I also run a boarding, leasing, and lesson stable, Shepard Stable. You can find us as Shepard Stable on the web. I teach English, Western, and therapeutic riding lessons and am a PATH International and CHA certified instructor. In addition, I am a licensed pharmacist. My dream is to be able to devote myself to teaching. Our Therapeion riders are SPECIAL and I would like to be able to devote myself to their programs 100%. We are fund raising to add an indoor arena and to winterize our current facility so we can offer year round services for our therapeutic riding students. If you feel like helping kids with disabilities PLEASE visit our web site to find out more about how you can help!!! Our riders beneift the most if they receive year round services but we need funding to help it happen. Therapeion is a 501(c)(3) and all donations are tax deductible :-)) While I was in school growing up I worked an average of 30 hours per week at the family pharmacy so didn't have time to socialize or make friends. Because of this I felt very much the loner and seldom saw fellow students away from school. I envy those of you who made friends in school that you are still in contact with. I wish I had those kind of relationships...relationships with history. In JrH and HS most people did not know that I was "horse crazy" and had a pinto gelding. My parents sold him without my permission or knowledge when I was a junior in HS and I was very upset, but there was nothing I could do about it. It was a done deed before I was informed. In fact, I found out when I was going to ride and my mother told me that the horse had been sold. That sucked!! I've more than made up for it now. Dennis and I own 9 horses and 3 mini donkeys. We board horses and Therapeion's eight horses live here. In all we have 30 equines at our stable. My primary horse, Phoebe, is a black and white registered Paint and Pinto (Swoon Song Two). I purchased her as an untrained 2 year old filly and have done all of her training. We participate in parades, shows, trail rides, and more. We have earned our 1000 hrs in the saddle award from the American Paint Horse Association. She also is Therapeion's back up horse. I am curr...Expand for more
ently training a buckskin Paint mare, an Appendix Quarter Horse mare, and retraining an Argentine Thoroughbred for her new career as a hunter under saddle pleasure mare. In addition, I am in charge of the selection, training, and care of all of our therapeutic riding horses/ponies/minis. Phoebe and I are currently taking dressage lessons and loving learning something new. I also started running barrels and poles on my Quarter Horse mare, Pops Tee Jay, at the age of 59! My husband runs barrels and poles on his two QH mares and we trail ride together. He's a Purdue Police lieutenant and has been a police officer for over 30 years. I have been published internationally, give speaking engagements, and am an honorary member of the Purdue Block & Bridle Club. Our newest adventure is a tack and feed store. We carry new and consignment saddles, tack, and horse care items. The proceeds are used to help support our therapeutic riding program. Riding in my primary form of relaxation. I also make jewelry for fun and sell it in the shop. Check out Brookston Tack and Feed on the web. I have two daughters.. my oldest is a paramedic in Indianapolis and getting married soon and the other a college student that works in a jewelry store in Indianapolis. (didin't start having kids until I was 33) My husband has 2 adult children and we have 8 grandchildren. I am one BUSY person but loving it! If you get near W. Lafayette come by for a visit. I just might throw you up on a horse and take you for a tour of our farm. lol! I always wanted to be a jockey and a vet when I grew up. My family would not allow either, saying that both were stupid ideas and neither were jobs for women. Despite their best efforts they were not able to completely suppress the horse crazies. Although I am now probably too old to become a jockey I could still make weight and sometimes have dreams of riding in a big race. The problem is at 59 I won't bouce if I come off...just break! Past hobbies have included skydiving (I have 500 jumps but quit when I had my second daughter) and painting watercolors. I haven't had time to paint since I moved to the Lafayette area but just rearranged the furniture upstairs to make room for a studio. I have had several private watercolor shows in Indy, one in North Manchester, and have sold a lot of paintings. I just hasn't been high priority since I moved. I used to take lessons at the Indianapolis Art Center but haven't found a lesson location here yet. I love to garden and especially love wildflowers. We feed the birds and trap and move the racoons, skunks, possums, and groundhogs that seem to find our farm irresistable to a more suitable location with woods and water and no humans or horses. The people from my past who I'd most like to see again are my Grandmother and Grandfather Allen, because they were the only two people in my life when I was growing up that showed me unconditional love. They both passed aways years ago but I miss them every day.
