Linda's Story

So I am having one of those bucket list moments. Next month I am in a musical at a local small theatre -- an off Broadway musical, Nunsense. There is one racist section in in that I am pleased to say our director also didn't like so editted out, but otherwise it is a fun little play. Great cast I am working with as well - 3 music teachers, one other school teacher, a theatre instructor at our local youth company and a young college student who has taken a lot of dance. As well, the director is a published playwright and known actor in town. As well, she has directed several production in town. I feel privileged to be a part of the cast since I have far less experience or theatric training. It is truly one of those bucket list moments. Life Let's see..... what are some of my memories ..... in a series of new schools (11 in all from grade 1 through high school grad. Elementary school - matching dresses, lunch lines and the girls porch in grade 1, an Easter contest in grade 2, playing Honey West in the neighbourhood, a box of foil and the world we folded out of it .....fork pompoms .... Kiss tag and being walked home from school, the music teacher teaching us "Would you like to fly in my beautiful balloon", "One God", and "Sound of Silence" ..... prison ball .... and kickball .... marbles ..... crossing guards ...... Brownies and Girl Scouts ...... boys putting snakes in our hair.... a wall of Teen Beat heartthrobs .... Junior high ...... walking halls, crushes and writing the sappy story of my "love life" such as it was ..... pep squad sleepovers and the grade 9s getting a red rover game going on the parking lot ...... the father daughter tea with the mint chocolate dessert we made in home ec...... learning to sew and choirs ..... High school ...... the retreat under the trees in Mark Morris and a lot of great conversations there, being the club historian ..... thinking about boys, crushes, and boys ...... Mrs. Falk, driver's ed, choirs and singing with friends ....lots of high school angst... Life has its ways of making changes and with all it has held there are too many good memories to leave a lot of room for all the ankst of childhood. I do leave enough room for it so that I can empathize as I work with my students. Thankfully, I have had time to grow up so that I can use that empathy to help students with choices and managing behaviors. (I groan and chuckle when I think of the melodramatically thinking kid I was and some of the behaviors that came out of that. I definately have students that helps me understand!) Yes, I have become a teacher after years of other choices. I've lived in Canada for over 25 years. I am divorced with three young adult children. end my children's early years at home with them. During that time I had the chance to be in a production of Sound of Music, leading some children's musicals and choirs in churches, working in a research project developing reading skills through awareness of learning styles, volunteering in a variety of activities in my children's schools, and getting to know my children. My teaching degree was finally completed in 1995. Though I had music in university, I finished my degree in general elementary. The next years were varied between substituting and taking the time to recover from my divorce while working in shelters for children. I am now working in a permanent position as an elementary music teacher in a French Immersion school (while learning French). Right now its preparation for the Christmas concert. I love the way the kids are taking over more and more of the creative process in this. As always, their excitement and enthusiasm invigorates me. I love the oportunity this job gives me to relate to children so dynamically. I presently live in Winnipeg, Manitoba though my school is about 25 minutes outside of the city. We definately have longer and colder winters then we knew back there back then! But we also can have some absoluteluy beautiful summers to make up for it. My youngest daughter, 22, enjoys working with computers and got married to another "computer geek" in February 2008. Hopefully the "grand cat" they adopted will be the only grand baby I will have until they have some time to build their relationship in marriage. The older daughter, 25, is a drama student at a local university and showing her own desire for excellence in her field. She especially seems to enjoy the back stage and managerial parts of the process. Maybe, according to her, she will be following mom into teaching .... right now though she is loving the drama. My son, 27, continues in a career he enjoys working with cars. He is into his friends and activities so seems to be finding his way in life. All are busy with their own lives so we see each other as we can. I keep my life busy with researching music and learning the language for teaching in French, arranging music for my students, writing for the enjoyment of it, playing some piano and guitar, taking photos and discovering how to run a variety of creative computer programs. Spring is finally here though so I hope to get out on my bike more. I must admit, I also enjoy figuring out who will win on Canadian and American Idol and Dancing with the Stars. So You Think You Can Dance is on in the back ground as I write this now. Maybe it is the music teacher in me but it is intriguing watching the people with their dreams even though there are som criticisms and people shown that are way over the top.
