Linda's Story

Life Hello all, I married Stephen Austin in 1975, and on Aug 2nd will be our 32nd anniversary. We have 2 children, Shauna and Chad. Shauna is 31 and has been married for 10 yrs. She has 2 boys. Tristan age 3, and Brendan age 18mo. She's is the head teacher for head start home visits in coffey county. Chad will be 29 in sept. and is still single. He currently is a professional trainer/strength and conditioning coach at 24 hr fitness in Olathe. Prior to this he taught Jr. High and High School PE in Highland Ks. He was also head wrestling coach and asst. football coach. He loves his job, but really misses coaching, so hopes to pick up a coaching job on the side. I have a degree in Herbal studies with certifications in Homeobotanical remedies and teas, and am a certified reflexologist. But living where we do doesn't give me much opportunity to develop a business out of it, so it is basically a hobby, helping family, friends, and referrals. Then 2 years ago, I also added a certification in nutrition. If nothing else came from it. I should have the healthiest family and extended family around. I love making up my herbal tea formulas/remedies. I have developed around 32 of them from everything from colds, flu, to allergies, insomnia, etc. Stephen turns 60 in sept.(he's 7 years older) and plans to retire in a few years. He's currently back at wolf creek consulting, so no traveling required, which is great so we can be around our grandbabies. Which, speaking of them, is what keeps me busy these days. I take care of them 3-4 days a week and love every minute of it. I still sing whenever I can. I started singing with my daughter when she turned 15, and we have had several experiences including a recording contract from AMi records and have a few singing contests under our belts. We won the big Branson singing contest that's been over memorial weekend for the last 5 years. We entered and won in the female category 2 different times. We did do alot of community theatre from 1991 thru 2003, and both of us had leading roles in several productions. In others I was either music director, or built the set. We still sing within the community whenever we get the chance. School I attended Towanda Grade School and Circle High School, graduating in 1972. From there I went to St. Mary;s College at Leavenworth. My parents felt better about me leaving home to attend col...Expand for more
lege away as St. Mary's was an all girls catholic school. Little did they know that there was 3 all boys schools within a 30 mile radious of St. Mary's, as well as Fort Leavenworth. Needless to say, there was alot of partying going on. And that was deceiving as well as the town itself looked like it was a ghost town by 9pm. But if you knew where to go, you could party every night of the week. But even with all of that and my first taste of freedom, I still ended up with 38 credits the end of the school year and was on the Deans List. I wound up only attending the 1 yr. as I was offered a recording contract with a small company out of Dallas/Ft Worth, and felt like I'd regret it if I didn't at least give it a shot. And it was going great guns until the company went under, but I don't regret my decision at all, any of them. Workplace Over the years, I have done several things. Before I was married, I worked as a loan cashier Borg Warner Credit. After I had my first child, I filled in for my Mom at Liberty Loan while she was off work for back surgery. When we moved to Burlington, I worked in a bank until my son was born. After that I did Cake decorating for several years, doing wedding cakes, as well as sheet cakes. I did this until the government made it almost impossible to work out of your home doing cakes. After just taking a break for a few years. I went back to school and got a degree in Herbal Studies with certifications in HB remedies as well as a certifications in Nutrition and as a reflexologist. Now I'm a consultant for nutrition and using herbs and natural suppliments and therapies in place of prescription drugs to control things like cholesterol, arthritic and gout pain, high blood pressure, hypoglycemia, weight, etc. And natural products to treat things like flu, common colds, sinus infections, headaches, etc. Most recently, I worked in a nursing home as a dietician but had to wind up quitting in may of 2005 as I contracted MRSA from there. I had a 16month long hard battle with this life threatening resistant staph infection. Mine was in the blood and I wound up having 5 surgeries and over 30 weeks of IV treatments twice daily in a 1 year span. My infectious desease doctor said that It wouldn't be safe for me to work in any kind of health care facility again. So now I do consulting out of the home and take care of my grandbabies ages 3 and 20months.
