Linda's Story

Life After I graduated I did one year at Indiana State University and then I took a one-year course at Indiana Business College in Richmond. After that, I worked at the probation office in the County Court House for a year. I became a Christian at age 19 and, in 1975, I went to Florida Bible College in Hollywood, Florida. There, I met Ian who was also a student at FBC. Ian is from England. We married in 1977 and stayed in Florida while he obtained an M.Div. from Luther Rice Seminary. In 1979 we moved to England and have lived here since. We have two daughters, Emma, age 25 and Kate, age 23. Emma graduate from the University of Southampton with a BsC in Psychology in 2005. She then went on to do a Post Graduate Certificate of Education qualification at South Bank University in London she is now a qualified primary school teacher. She has travelled quite a bit having spent time for three summers on mission trips in Central and South America as well as working in a school for a month in Uganda. She is in her second year teaching at a local primary school and is engaged. She and Paul are getting married on May 29, 2010! Kate graduated from Durham University with a BSc in Psychology. She was very busy at university with orchestra, being a member of a rowing team and helping to start a new choir at the university. She travelled in South America for six weeks in the summer (and loved it) and then worked a few weeks at home to earn a bit of money. She went on to University of Nottingham to do a masters degree in Occupational Psychology which she has now completed and is working as an associate occupational psychologist for a small consulting firm. She took the summer off and spent it working at a resort in Alaska. She is home now but hasn't lost the travel bug! We lived in a beautiful little village in Kent called Downe for 30 years but in January 2009 we moved because Ian has been appointed as the pastor of a church across town in a place called St Paul's Cray. This has been quite a life change for us but we are enjoying it. I changed jobs two years ago and work for a company called The Harvest Partnership which is a small firm of independent financial advisers. I love working as an investment adviser and also love working close to home. I can cycle, and do, to work most days which is brilliant. I spend my spare time doing the things I like to do such as going to the gym, line dancing, church activities and socialising. My parents moved to Florida and lived there for many...Expand for more
years but in March 2005, they moved back to Indiana! I am not sure of the wisdom of that move - they don't like the cold! But, there you are. I am not sure how long they will stay there before the warmth of Florida beckons! We recently bought a place in Florida and I am hoping that will entice them back! If you knew my family, know that I had two brothers. Sonny, who graduated from RHS in 1973, died in 1987 of non-Hodgkins lymphoma. He was 32. John, my little brother (he was 11 years younger than me!) also died. He was killed in an automobile accident in 1983 at the age of 19. This has been very difficult for my parents. On a much more positive note, I am really pleased to put this biography here in the hopes of hearing from old friends. Please get in touch and if you want to take a trip to England, just let me know - we'll offer you a refuge for a night or two if you want! School I had a lot of fun in high school but I do wish I had been a little more serious about some things. I think I could have worked harder and done better. I am now so interested in current affairs and politics but back then, couldn't care less. I wish I had been more mature and had had a better perspective on life. But, I guess some of that goes with the territory. I mean, we lived in Indiana! Pretty parochial! Living in England has changed my perspective on so many things. I love going back to Richmond but it reminds me of why I was happy to leave. Not much has changed. But, just so I don't seem too negative, I have to say I have great memories! College The year I spent at Indiana State was really good fun but I think the instant freedom from home probably wasn't the BEST thing for me! I had a lot of fun, just about passed and when I went home for the summer, I was told by my dad that I wouldn't be going back. I guess he "sensed" that I wasn't really into my studies :) And he said I could party from home and it would cost him a lot less! Harsh, eh? Anyway, probably for the best. Except that I couldn't imagine spending my life working at Osco Drugs and so was pretty scared about my future. The folks suggested business college which I, naturally, totally disagreed with. But, since my back was up against the wall, I thought I had better check it out. Turned out to be the best thing I ever did. I had a little stint at the Wayne County Probation Office (as a secretary - NOT a probationer!!!) and then headed for Florida to attend Florida Bible College. The rest, as they say, is history!
