Linda's Story

Life Hi, everyone... After graduating, I went to San Jose Bible College for a few years... Worked in a Drug and Crisis Center there in San Jose, too. I came back to Taft in 1974 where I remet Mike and his two children. I married Mike Brock in 1975 and adopted his two children shortly thereafter. We had three more sons over the next several years. He had been a truck driver most of those years, but a couple of years ago, he started doing oilfield testing and is home most of the time after work now. Much nicer !!! We moved to McKittrick in 1990 and became foster parents to several boys over the next several years... I have worked for the County since 1990 as an Instructional Aide for the Handicapped... Severe class the past 9 years, but this year the city district took over the county classes so I lost my job because I can't drive to the other county classes. The closest would be over 30 minutes away. I hope to get a job with Taft College in their TIL program helping special people learn to live on their own. My oldest son, Charles (36)lives in FL with his wife and 4 daughters... Rachael (35) lives in TX with her hubby and 3 sons... Mick (31) lives in Valley Acres with his wife and 1 son... Manuel (30) lives in Taft and has 2 daughters and 1 son... James (29) lives with his wife, 1 daughter, and 1 so... (Yep... 13 grandchildren)and my youngest, Robert (26) is living at home and works for our church and for a local realtor. We have 5 acres here in McKittrick... We only have 1 horse now... The older ones have passed (had 5 for awhile when the kids were younger). We also have 1 border collie and 3 Pembroke Welsh Corgis. I also foster rescue dogs for the Rescue Service my sister works for (Unity Thrift--Online) We attend church at Community Christian Fellowship in Taft where Mike is the Financial Administrator and I am the Librarian. Robert runs the computer LCD. and Charles has done some missionary work in Haiti with his church in FL. I am MOST BLESSED in my life... School Biggest crush... Dennis Walker and Bobby Cates Loved my 3rd grade teacher, Mrs. Reed in Conley School... She understood when my little dog was sick and had to be put to sleep... And Mrs. Dennis in Roosevelt School-- 6th grade... I remember her crying when we heard that JFK had been killed. Hated Go...Expand for more
oseneck... can't remember her name... made me walk on a bee sting all the way from the pool at Lincoln back to Roosevelt and griped when I limped. Loved Mrs. Kinsey, the girls counselor at Lincoln. I remember trading Doc Savage books with Mike Brock who was engaged to my best friend during our Senior year... Wouldn't talk to him when they broke up because I didn't want to hurt her. She had passed away by the time we met after I came back from College in San Jose... we got together to talk and the rest is history... College I have many happy memories of my time in San Jose at the Bible College and at the Upper Room Drug and Crisis Center. Some of my best life-long friends were made there and several people I still pray for... Sue Peck (Soupy), Gilly, Cos (Margaret Cosmey--now Ronneruds), Knepper ( Carol Knepper--now Laughlin)and many others... Workplace I worked as a secretary/receptionist at the Upper Room Drug and Crisis Center in San Jose while attending the Bible College. When I got back to Taft, I did housecleaning while going to Taft College until I married Mike Brock in 1975. I was a housewife and mother until my youngest started Kindergarten, then I started volunteering at the school to help out... I "taught" computer for a couple of years until they convinced me to start subbing as an aide and get paid to work with the kids. When I started working with the special ed kids as a Sub Aide, I was hooked and when a permanent job opened up, I got it. I worked with Billie Calder at Conley School for 6 years with Mildly handicapped students, then with several other teachers for the next couple of years (Hard to find teachers to come out to Taft... finally got one that decided to live here) I've worked with Anna Eggleston at Jefferson School with the Severely Handicapped for the past 8 years. Our students range in age from 3 to 14 with a mental age of 3 mons. to 3 years. Some have Stomach tubes or trachs... Wheelchairs, walkers, and other mobilizing equipment... I love working with them on the computers which is the only way some of them can communicate or interact with anything. Being able to touch a switch and really "Make SOMETHING happen" by themselves brings such joy to my special kids... It almost doesn't seem fair to get paid to play with and love kids all day...
