Life Update:
On Sept. 14, 2013, my daughter, Tracy, married a wonderful young man from a wonderful family. See picturesw.
Almost 3 years ago, in 2009, we sold our large bungalow and bought a smaller town house in Carleton Place. Using the difference in house prices, we purchased a lovely 3 bedroom condo in Naples, Florida, where we spend winters from around Oct. 20 to April 20. A short flight home at Chistmas renews health coverage. Summers are spent at our cottage on Round Lake near Algonquin Park. Love it!!
My older daughter, Alison has relocated back to the Ottawa area. She packed in a carrier in journalism and took the law clerk course. She is presently employed by Gowlings Law Firm in Ottawa, which deals in big corporate and government law suits.
After teaching in Ottawa for 33 years, I took early retirement at 52 yrs in 2000, and moved to a new bungalow in Carleton Place, a town of abour 10000, a 20 minute drive from Ottawa. The last 15 years were spent at a school in the Vanier area of Ottawa, a very low socio-economic area where my Gr. 6 students passed hookers and drug dealers daily on their way to and from school. Hence, I was ready for early retirement!!! Nine of my years at that school were also spent as a teacher-librarian and I loved those years. However, budget...Expand for more
cuts saw that position slowly disappear.
I married a man I met on the School Board who also retired from his supervisory position in the maintenance division.
I have 2 daughters-- Alison is 28 and living in Niagara Falls where she is editor/reporter for 2 twice weekly local papers. She is working at a Political Science degree at Brock U. part time. Tracy is 17, working on Gr. 11 and working part time at the Walmart Superstore which just opened 3 weeks ago in November, 2007.
To occupy my spare time, I was on the executive for the Navy League of Canada- Branch 211 Lanark for 3 years as Tracy was involved there as a Sea Cadet. I also am a volunteer driver for the Community Support Office in Carleton Place, driving seniors to appointments into Ottawa and throughout Lanark County to local hospitals. Only the mileage is paid.
I just completed the H&R Block Income Tax course and will probably do a bit of that from Jan. to April if one of the nearby officed chooses to hire me. Finally, this winter, I am also selling 50/50 tickets at the Ottawa Senators home games- mostly for the heck of it. Proceeds go to the SENS Foundation which mainly supports kids charities.I love hockey and this way I watch the last half of games free and get free parking as well.
It's a good life.
