Linda's Story
Peace Work
The most important thing about me is that I have been working for peace most of my adult life. I used to go to anti-war rallies in the 1960s but then switched to pro-peace activities. Now that I have retired, I go into schools and give peace assemblies to children, helping them to learn how to solve their disputes without fighting. I founded two peace groups -- Moving for Peace and The Peace Information Network. You can read about this work at the Moving for Peace website and if you want to join in, I can send you a CD with peace assemblies and other peace materials. I interact with hundreds of other peacemakers throughout the world.
Philosophy of Life
I believe in unconditional love for all -- that way I don't have to choose who to love or make decisions about what is a good quality! Of course, I don't have to LIKE everyone or what they do!! I am a spiritual person who meditates daily. I believe in the power of healing. I feel blessed in my life -- I live in a lovely retirement flat, have precious offspring, and have friends around the world with whom I communicate through the internet. I work hard for peace but I know it is something each person has to come to in their own heart.
Education
I started life in Williamsville New York, attending Primary School and then starting High, but left in 1958. We moved to Bellevue Washington and I went to Bellevue Junior High and then Bellevue High School. I went to UPS in Tacoma for 2 years, then finished university at the University of Washington, majoring in History with minors in Psychology and Sociology. I got my Masters Degree in Information Systems at Leeds Metropolitan University in 1990. I also got a Certificate in Counselling.
Work
I did odd jobs when I was in High School and then had a few in between travelling from 1962 to 1974, including working at a blueprint company, an eye doctors, Boeing (of course!), and the University of Washington. In the latter days, I was a secretary in the Dean's Offices at the UW in the College of Fisheries and then the College of Engineering. I moved to California and worked for a pathologist at the Veterans Hospital in La Jolla, until my first child was born in 1975. After I finished my Masters Degree in Leeds UK, I taught at Leeds Metropolitan University for 16 years. My subjects were Systems Analysis and Design, Information Systems, and Personal Development. I retired in 2005 and now my 'job' is looking after my grandsons whenever the need arises.
Travel
I believe I learned as much or more from travelling to other places and meeting people from other cultures than I did from my formal education. In my life I have done a whole lot of travelling -...Expand for more
- all around Europe in 1966 for 5 months after graduation from the UW, the Middle East in 1971 for 6 months, all over the USA including Hawaii, and also these places (but not in this order!): Egypt, Tunisia, Turkey, Crete, Cyprus, Malta, Hong Kong, Australia, Central America, Mexico and Canada. I moved permanently to England in 1981 and raised my family mostly by myself. I still hanker to go to Peru, especially Machu Pichu; Russia, especially St. Petersburg; perhaps China. I recently went to the top of Norway on a cruise and visited my brothers in Seattle several times up to my brother Jeff's death. I will be there for the High School Reunion summer 2012. I went to India in December 2010, a lifelong desire satisfied as I was on the Ganges at Sunrise and participated in a Peace Conference.
Family
My fabulous mother died in 1997 and my amazing dad died in 1999. They gave me such an excellent start in life and a lot of moral support over the years! I had two brothers, Jeff died in 2010 but Ken still lives in the Seattle area. I have 3 children -- Airasa currently a school teacher, now married to Ian (from Northern Ireland) with two children Owen born in September 2007 and Rory born in March 2010 - they live in Leeds; Naomi who, after 10 months in Australia, now lives and works in Leeds; and Dylan who is working his way up at a local bank and also lives in Leeds. I am truly besotted with my adorable grandsons. It is wonderful to see the next generation. Over the years, I have had cats and an amazing dog, fish, birds, a turtle and a rabbit.
Physical Stuff
I am disabled -- I have congenitally weak tendons and ligaments. Because of these I have had a few accidents over the years, the most recent one in March 2008 when I broke my left shoulder, left knee and left ankle! I am still recovering from that; it takes a long time. But I am well enough to do some extensive travelling this year, having done very little since 2008!
Personality
I am almost always in a good mood, have a sunny disposition, look for the best in others, give what I can when I can to those who need, and love to learn new things because I am massively curious about everything. I still love to travel though it gets harder each year! I am also very interested in reading about Quantum Theory and how the universe works. I would have liked to travel in space, but that seems unlikely now. I would like to live to 100, as long as I am not in a bad physical state! I have a grandmother who died 3 weeks short of 100, so I have a good chance of making it there!
You can find me on Facebook if you look for me!
I hope some of my old friends will find my story of interest and contact me.
