INVICTUS
Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever Gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.
In the fell clutch of circumstance,
I have not screamed nor cried aloud;
Under the bludgeonings of chance,
My head is bloody - but unbowed.
Beyond this world of wrath and tears
Looms but the horror of the Shade
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find: me, unafraid.
It matters not how straight the gate,
How charred with punishments the scroll.
I am the master of my fate,I am the captain of my soul.
My hand, a little raised, might press a star -
Where I may look, the frosted peaks are spun,
So shaped before Olympus was begun,
Spanned each to each now by a silver bar.
Thus to face Beauty have I traveled far,
But now, as if around my heart were run
Hard, lacing fingers, so I stand, undone.
Of all my tears, the bitterest these are.
Who humbly followed Beauty all her ways,
Begging the brambles that her robe had passed,
Calling her name in corridors of stone-
That day shall know his weariedest of days
When Beauty, still and suppliant at last,
Does not suffice him, once they are alone.
-Dorothy Parker

or him who knows the ceaseless urge
To go...go ever on, carried by tide and trade-wind's pulsing surge
Lured by the bright mirage of far-off places,
Forests and jungles and bleak frozen spaces,
Ready to bid love greeting or farewell
With the same light gesture. Knowing the spell
That makes the Somewhere Else the Promised Land
Caring no whit if Sun or Surr or Samarkand
Shall bleach his bones or curious creatures of the sea
Play havoc with his flesh. Content to be
Lover of chance, with loneliness for wife,
Faithful to faithlessness of all save life,
Ready to face that last dim misted trail
When eager eyes and pliant muscles fail,
Thinking of Death as just another place to go,
Another road to walk, another land to know
-Don Blanding
Start not, nor deem my spirit fled;
In me behold the only skull
From which, unlike a living head,
Whatever flows is never dull.
"I lived, I loved, I quaffed like thee:
I died. Let earth my bones resign.
Fill up, thou canst not injure me -
The worm hath fouler lips than thine.
"Tis better to hold the sparkling grape
Than nurse the earthworm's slimy brood
And circle, in a goblet's shape,
The drink of Gods, than reptiles' food.
"Where once my wit, perchance, hath shone,
In aid of others' let me shine,
And when, alas, our brains are gone,
What nobler substitute than wine?
"Another race
When thou and thine, like me, are fled,
May rescue thee from earth's embrace
To rhyme and revel with the dead.
"Why not? Since through life's little day
Our heads such sad effects produce,
Redeemed from worms and wasting clay
This chance is theirs to be of use.
Byron".
More about Lirit:"'Come to the edge', he said.
They said, 'We are afraid'.
'Come to the edge', he said.
They came.
He pushed them...
And they flew." - Guillaume Apollinaire
