Lisa's Story

I was born in New Orleans at Charity Hospital. Life started out for me in the 3rd ward area of the city. My mom only had my sister (Ursula) and I. She worked hard and gave us all that she could. My extended family was small and very close and they gave my mom, my sister, and I lots of love. When I was younger, I lived in the ghe-tto. There was a bar at the corner of our house that had drama almost every night. How exciting. We knew all the drunks that hung around the neighborhood, and they kept all the kids in check. They always had to run me inside to put my shoes on. They were very good at helping us to cross the street. I went to Martinez for Head Start, Mc Donogh 31 Elementary for Kindergarten, St. Joseph Elementary School for 1st and 2nd grade. Mom got married to the best husband/step-father in the whole world. We all moved to the 6th ward area of the city and from grades 3 - 6, I attended Mc Donogh 31 Elementary. After the trials of elementary school, I moved on to Mc Donogh 28 for 7 - 9 grades (Go T-Birds). I think I fell in love about 40 times in those (3) years. Yes... that's when I really started noticing "BOYS." I always wanted to go to the ARMY after high school. Mama thought that was a great idea. From Mc D 28, I moved on to Kennedy High School. High School was not so exciting because most all my friends were at my neighborhood school. I had a few buddies at Kennedy, but my heart was just not there and I did not put my best foot forward. It was a long, slow three years for me but I got through it, graduating in 1980. Life plans took a slight detour for a while after high school, but with...Expand for more
faith in God, lots of prayer, and a strong-willed mother and step-dad, I made it through the storm. I really would love to hear from some of my buddies and friends that went to school with me. Even the people that I just passed in the hallways of life. I'm in Texas now. I have two beautiful daughters, a nice little home, and an interesting husband. I'm beginning to like it here, finally. I'd thought seriously about going back to New Orleans, but because of the economy there, I think it best that I stay here. I'm wearing my hair all natural now. I got rid of the relaxer, the stockings, make-up, and heels. My kids say I look like a Hippie. I LOVE it! I manage a battered women's shelter and my job is super interesting. It pays good too. I meet all sorts of people from all walks of life. While it's unfortunate that we have to meet under these circumstances, I thank God for every person that has passed through the doors of the shelter. I've leared a little more about myself through interaction with these women and their children. Their stories touch me like nothing I can explain, but it does my heart well to see them leave here with a new attitude and outlook on life. Not all of the ladies leave here to move forward. Yes, some go back to the abuser. Since I've been here one went back and her abuser killed her little boy. Some go back to the abuser and come back within a few months (some even weeks). I stay in prayer for all the ladies and their children. But back to school ties... drop me a line and let me know how you're doing and what you've been up to. I would LOVE to hear from you all. Love ya, Lisa
