Lisa's Story

Workplace After I moved to San Fracisco in December of 1996 by the beginning of January I was working two odd jobs just to get rent money comeing in. Two months later I found a way in the commercial photography community and started working at a chrome lab where I met and networked with many amazing photographers. After a while I started getting assisting jobs. All the while I missed doing hair which is what I did to support myself through college since I graduated from Ridgewood (and Marchmen Vocational Center). Mom was smart having me get a trade while still in high school. Many of you might not know this but my mom did hair all her life so I actually grew up in the hair industry, hence all the wacky hairstyles and mohawks I had. So since I was cutting all the photographers, other assistants, and models hair I decided to get back in the hair industry. This time shooting for the top notch people. I got in to one of the biggest salons in S.F. and started apprenticing. It was a long hard road makeing minimum wage for 2 1/2 years. I hated the pretentiousness of where I was but loved the creative and high end talent and found myself at another amazing salon where I had to start from the bottom up again. Two years later I finished and now I am happily out of the downtown area and currently working ...Expand for more
in the fabulous high end and trendy neighborhood of Pacific Heights. The salon I work at is a small private environment; we do not advertise our name anywhere, not even on the outside of the salon. Our clients are all word of mouth and/or locals so it makes for a very special place. I've had the pleasure to travel quit a bit to study under some amazing stylists in L.A. and New York. I also teach at the salon when we have apprentices. I am also an in salon educator for a product line we carry. Three years ago I had the oppurtunity to work in the film industry for a short period, also studied with Susan Lipson for that. It has been a long road to gain the knowledge to be where I am at and it was all worth it. I lived on minimum wage for over four years in San Francisco to be able to work and live here, and I did it! I love my profession. I thank my mother for instilling business practicality and always influencing my creative side. I never thought I'd still be doing hair today. I love that I teach and I get to travel a lot for inspiration, as well as I get to have some pretty amazing vacations. And...I still get to work on my photography without having to do work people tell me to do like commercial photography. I get to shoot what I want for peoples' visual pleasure, or displeasure. Life is good.
