Lloyd's Story

My history: I married my Lewistown HS girlfriend, Peggy Bishop, in '72. That same year I went to work for Cat at the Mapleton plant after a directionless semester at Spoon River College in spring '71. We had a daughter, Heather, in 1974 but then, unfortunately, divorced in '75. After the divorce, I moved to Peoria and shared a house with Alan Froehling (CHS class of '69) until '79 when he and I both married the women we were engaged to within weeks of each other. In '77 I started the Cat electrician training program. In '77 I also ran into Kathy Harn (CHS class of "70) in Peoria and we started dating, eventually marrying in '79. We had a son, Brian, in 1980. I finished training and became an electrician in '81 at the Cat Mossville plant. That lasted 1 yr. until Cat ran into trouble and I had to go back to the line. Like many at that time, between strikes and layoffs, I worked about 2-1/2 years between '80-85. In '82 I became concerned about my future at Cat. Kathy suggested I should go back to college in engineering. I had never been a great student because I had no goal, so that was a leap, but Kathy believed in me and she was willing to work (she was a Speech and Language Therapist in the schools) while I went to college. So, I went to Illinois Central College part-time between '82-85, and then, when Cat laid me off the final time in '85, I went to school full time at ICC, transferred to U of I in '86, and graduated in '88 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering. I took a position as an engineer at a Kimberly-Clark Corp. plant (Kleenex, Scott, Huggies, Kotex, and other brands) in Paris TX upon graduation. Kathy and I had another son, Kyle in '90. sition in Neenah, WI in '94. Kathy's mother, Norma (many of you may have had her for English or Latin at CHS) moved in with us in Neenah as her husband had died and she was unwell. We never left Neenah. After living in 26 different houses between my birth and '94 I have been in the same home since. My daughter, Heather, married in '07 and blessed me with a granddaughter in '08 and another in '10. They live in the quad cities and I see them often. My son Brian married in '08. He and his wife work in advertising in London, the UK after making career stops in Milwaukee and Chicago. I only get to see them twice a year—thankfully there is Skype. My son Kyle moved home after college in '15 and he took a position in corporate procurement at Kimberly-Clark Corp. We still live in the same home and I am happy to have him here. Kathy became ill in '09 with a brain tumor. After the initial surgery, she was in no pain and she was able to go back to work. We were assured by the doctors that she was in little danger and was improving, but she fell ill again in May of '11 and died in her sleep in August while I was on a business trip. Devastating. Nonetheless, life goes on and she would not want me to be unhappy. Norma continued to live with me until '15 when she became too ill for me to take care of at home. She died at a nursing home in April '16 one day shy of her 97th birthday. I retired in '15 because I could and because I wanted more time to travel to see my far-flung children, grandchildren, family, and friends. My children and grandchildren are my best friends—we vacation together often. My life is and has been very good. I hope it will be for some time as I feel blessed! I hope that your life has been as good as mine.
