Loren's Story

Life After graduation I attended the University of Wisconsin studying plant pathology and playing ice hockey. When my grade point dropped below my goals against average, I re-evaluated my path in education, rehabbed my GPA and enrolled in Physical Education because I had always loved sports and helping people. I captained the UW Soccer Club for three years, was a volunteer track coach and hockey coach at East, helped Connie Carpenter train for her first two national championships in cycling, helped start the Madison Badger-Jets, a youth track club and helped found Madison United Soccer Club. In 1976 I became the University of Wisconsin¿s first assistant women¿s track coach under Peter Tegen. I also coached the Madison Speed Skating Club for two years to USA National and North American Team Titles, and founded one of the two first women¿s soccer clubs in Madison on the east side, the Super Shells. I served as president of the Wisconsin AAU track and field and AAU Junior Olympics. I also was the national AAU Junior Olympic Chairman for the Decathlon and Boy¿s Track and Field until 1980. I also became active on a national level in the AAU and The Athletics Congress as national coach coordinator for the long jump, heptathlon and the hurdles. In 1982 I accepted a position as assistant women¿s track coach at the University of Tennessee. I coached many All-Americans, several national champions and an American Record Holder in the 400-meter hurdles. In 1983 I accepted a position at Louisiana State University as assistant track coach and after the women¿s team won both the SEC Indoor and Outdoor titles and the team finished third and second at the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Championships, respectively, I accepted the position of Head Women¿s Track Coach. From 1985 to 1989 LSU won nine SEC Conference Championships and five NCAA National Team Championships. In 1983 I was one of the founding fathers of the USA Coaching Education System for The Athletics Congress. In the early 1990s I was named Chairman for Curriculum Development for the Sprints and Hurdles events for the International Amateur Athletics Association¿s Coach Education Certification System, a position I hold today. During this period I was named twice as assistant coach for the USOC Olympic Festival and in 1984 I was selected as US National Team Coach for the Heptathlon which competed in Canada and France. In 1989 I co-founded Speed Dynamics, a sport consultancy that focused on coaching education and athlete performance. We launched an instructional video series that is still used today as the industry standard and has been viewed in over 100 countries in the world. I also moved from the collegiate system to working in the professional coaching arena. I have had the opportunity to coach and lectu...Expand for more
re internationally in more than 80 countries the most recent of which are China, Luxembourg and Germany. I have coached athletes in World Championships and Olympic Games from 1988 ¿ 2000, more than 50 medalists and 140 NCAA All-Americans. For the Sydney Games in 2000 I was named Head Olympic Coach for Liberia. In 1998 I started consulting with the Atlanta Falcons for speed and conditioning. They went to the super bowl that year, and I have always taken full credit. I have since consulted with the Detroit Lions, Jacksonville Jaguars, Chicago Bulls, numerous college and university teams and several International Sports Federations. I was high performance consultant for athletics Australia in 1995 ¿ 96, national sprints and hurdles coach in Thailand 1997 -98 and coached Donovan Bailey, then world record holder in the 100-meters in 1998. In 1999 I founded a business named Velocity Sports Performance in Marietta, GA. At Velocity Sports Performance, children, from 7 ¿ 17, are taught how to be faster and increase their athleticism so they can get off the bench and stay in the game longer. We also developed a reputation with the high level, international amateur athlete and the professional player. In 2001 I took a sabbatical while we were building out the franchise model for Velocity Sports Performance to direct the International Performance Institute serving the IMG/Bolletteri Academy in Bradenton, Florida. I have two sons. LoRen Richard was born end of July of 2002 and Ryan Linwood was born end of November of 2004. In 2002 we launched our franchise offering for Velocity Sports Performance, selling 45 market areas in five months. That was the impetus to return to Atlanta January 2003 to become the Chief Performance Officer for Velocity Sports Performance. We sold the company in 2006 and I worked for the owners as the founder until 2008. In the fall of 2008 I began coaching again in the sport of track and field and was fortunate to coach several World and Olympic Champions. In 2011 I rejoined IMG Academy as their Director of Speed and Movement and two years later added the Director of Track and Field and Cross Country to my responsibilities. I serve in these positions today as well as that or international lecturer and consultant in high performance sports. In 2011 I started coaching Zhang Peimeng and Li Jinzhe, a 100m Sprinter and Long Jumper. In 2013 Peimeng ran 10.00 for a new NR and became the fastest Asian Born Athlete and Li broke the NR in the long Jump 8.47m. The fall of 2013 I started coaching the Men's and Women's 4 X 100m Relay Team. In 2015 Su Bingtian ran 9.99 and qualified for the final at the World Championships hel in Beijing and the Men's Relay Team captured the Bronze Medal. More to come when I have a moment. I currently live in Shanghai, China.
