After graduating from Northeastern Illinois University and a four-year enlistment in the U.S. Air Force, I returned to the West Side neighborhood in 1972 to work in the fields of education and counseling at Farragut High School. I also worked with an Urban Programs chapter of the YMCA, where I counseled gangs/ex-gang members, juvenile offenders, and troubled youth. Among the honors I Have earned are installations into the Farragut High School Alumni Hall of Fame, and selection as the 1996 Lay Father of the Year by the Chicago Baptist Ministers' Conference.
