Lori's Story
Life:
Hey! If you remember me I'd love to hear from you!!! Look me up on Facebook, since it's easier to stay in contact there!
I've been back in Austin since June 2004 after a 4 year stint in Portland, OR... which is beautiful, but not home. I was working on my bachelor's in Psychology at St. Edward's University, but I'm taking some time off right now & trying to decide exactly what I'd like to do once I graduate (get my masters? phd? psyd? or something completely different?).
I have 2 boys, Tristen (born in 93) & Sebastian (born in 96). I divorced my 2nd husband last year (2005). I live in a cute little duplex in north central Austin with my youngest son & 2 cats.... & in December (2007) I became engaged to my best friend & the following month he & his son moved in with us!
That's it, in a nutshell.
School:
I wish I would have kept in better touch with certain people but am fortunate to still be close to many of my old friends. If only I had known then a few of the things that I know now....
It's an odd world.... I just wish that, in high school, so many people weren't so busy fitting in with this crowd or that.... so many of us missed out on getting to know some really great people, just because they didn't look/dress/act like we thought they should!
College:
I've been in & out of college since 2002.... still have a LONG way to go!!! Spent 2 years at Portland Community College in Portland, OR & then moved back to Austin & started at St. Edward's. My major is Psychology & I plan to one day be in private practice as a therapist. I had originally planned on getting a PsyD, but now I am considering other options, so who knows where I might end up eventually.
None of those questions apply to me! I started late in the game... 10 years after high school... already had kids & a husband!
Workplace:
Well, for the past 5+ yea...Expand for more
rs I have worked in medical offices in various positions, mostly dealing with insurance & credit/collections issues. My last full time position was incredibly rewarding & a wonderful experience. I took on an A/R that was in very poor shape & had been completely mismanaged & turned it completely around, reducing the overally balance by over 75% in less than one year! Needless to say I am very proud of all that I accomplished in this position. The wonderful people I had the pleasure of working with there really made a difference in my life & continue to do so today.
In August of 2002 I left the workforce in order to pursue my education full time. While in school I also worked part time (during the 03-04 school year) as a Forensic Psychology Assistant - a job that I truly loved! After returning to Texas I was able to focus completely on my studies & not work... I was simply a full time student, majoring in Psychology, a mom, & a teacher to my 8 year old son, whom I homeschooled... unfortunately those things came to an end in Jan 2005, when I decided it was time to end my marriage. I traded in school & staying home for my independence & security. I don't regret my decision for one minute & look forward to returning to school this fall.
Today I work about 30 hours per week for a Psychologist in central Austin. I love my co-workers & the fact that this job gives me the flexibility to be there when my son gets out of school every day, or when he needs me to leave early, or stay home with him. Having that time together was very important this past year as we adjusted to our new life.
I owe a great debt of gratitude to many of my former co-workers who gave me the courage & strength to walk away from my job (financial security), in order to take a chance & pursue my dreams. Their encouragement & support has meant a great deal to me.
