Life Got Sc.B. in Chemistry from Brown in 1975, Ph.D. from MIT in 1979 (worked with and was first grad student of a Nobel Priize winner) in Inorganic Chemistry, did postdoctoral research at University of Michigan, was non-tenured assistant professor at Michigan for 3 years, then joined faculty at Univ of Iowa where I remain. Married to Kathi Madison (my freshman chemistry lab partner), from Murray Hill, NJ, a recently-retired dematologist at the Univ of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, in 1976. Have two children, Kyle (born 1989, has had some drug issues) and Kristen (adopted as infant, 1995, now a successful special ed teacher at an elementary school). I am a chemistry and radiology (secondary appointment) professor at Univ of Iowa, doing fundamental research in inorganic, actinide (uranium and thorium), transition metal organometallic, and early transition metal cluster chemistries with potential applications in diagnostic medical imaging. My research uses glove boxes and Schlenk lines, so I have become an accomplished scientific plumber, electrician, and glassblower. Have received several awards for teaching excellence - teach undergraduates and graduate students in lecture and advanced lab classes and in research - and have many Ph.D students now in successful careers.
