Louis's Story

Life Got Sc.B. in Chemistry from Brown in 1975, Ph.D. from MIT in 1979 (worked with and was first grad student of a Nobel Priize winner) in Inorganic Chemistry, did postdoctoral research at University of Michigan, was non-tenured assistant professor at Michigan for 3 years, then joined faculty at Univ of Iowa where I remain. Married to Kathi Madison (my freshman chemistry lab partner), from Murray Hill, NJ, a recently-retired dematologist at the Univ of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, in 1976. Have two children, Kyle (born 1989, has had some drug issues) and Kristen (adopted as infant, 1995, now a successful special ed teacher at an elementary school). I am a chemistry and radiology (secondary appointment) professor at Univ of Iowa, doing fundamental research in inorganic, actinide (uranium and thorium), transition metal organometallic, and early transition metal cluster chemistries with potential applications in diagnostic medical imaging. My research uses glove boxes and Schlenk lines, so I have become an accomplished scientific plumber, electrician, and glassblower. Have received several awards for teaching excellence - teach undergraduates and graduate students in lecture and advanced lab classes and in research - and have many Ph.D students now in successful careers. Have enjoyed mineral collecting, Tae Kwon Do (TKD; black belt, but rusty now), bicycling, gardening, family. Drive a 2015 Subaru WRX. N...Expand for more
early died in 2004 from a pulmonary embolus - probably survived from my bicycling and Tae Kwon Do fitness - and have been on blood thinners since then, limiting my ability in contact sports like TKD. Have fond memories of LHS and many of my classmates, Otto Salzer, auto shop, electronics shop, and Linden. Have recently gone over my LHS yearbooks and the humorous, heartfelt, and at times curious comments from my closest classmates. Participated in a Zoom call organized by Bob Palitz with some LHS classmates, some of whom I knew. Father and mother moved to Iowa City from 8th ward Linden in 2008; father passed away May 2021, mother (94 y.o.) still living in house in Iowa City, and we have helped take care of them. In occasional contact with Jim (formerly the Beast) Mitroka from LHS days, and until recently with Ron "TK" Tkach, who passed away too early in August 2022. Spent wonderful sabbatical times at Los Alamos National Lab and, more recently, California Institute of Technology, doing chemistry research and hiking in mountains on weekends. Fear of covid has limited our recent travels, but we have enjoyed many trips to New Mexico, South Carolina, Arizona, and San Diego CA. Early European travel to Scotland, England, lower Provence - more recently, professional travel to Berlin and Barcelona meeting fellow chemists and discussing our research. Basically still a science nerd and political liberal.
