Louie's Story
Life
I graduated Greenwood High School in 1972. I was a little too young to go to Vietnam. I continued working at Fred Smith Company (started with Mr. Fred as a sophomore in HS) then, at Grendle Mill the rest of the year (went to Lander College at night). I saved my money for college (trust me...I did not want to spend the rest of my life at Grendle Mill). Then, started USC in January of 1973. About 9 weeks later, I was struck by a car while I was riding my motorcycle.
I spent about 5 months in a Columbia, SC hospital and about one year in various forms of body casts. Wasted allot of time asking "WHY"?
Like everybody else, I struggled through the recessions of the 70s. I tried restaurant management for a few years. I also helped my dad start a clothing business in Greenville, SC.
I reconciled with God in 1979. I let Him take the reins of my life. Thinking that I might have been called to preach, I attended a Bible college for a couple of years. I ran out of money in 1981 (it was still a recession...remember?). That year, I started work at Lucas CAV. Nice folks to work for. Lucas also assisted me with tuition to both Greenville Tec...Expand for more
h and Limestone College. But, recession caused them to lay off about 200 of us in 1982. Next, I worked for about four years with National Lock Company in Mauldin, SC.
With help from both Lucas and National Lock, I finished my BS at night; graduating Limestone College in 1986. Then, in July 1987, I decided to go to a relatively recession-proof town...Washington, DC. I worked for one year with the Labor Department. Then, I worked at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) from 1988-2004; the last ten years working on data systems. Thanks to a little help from USPTO, I completed my Master of Science Degree in Information Management (MS) from Marymount University in December of 2002.
I have had a few surgeries since 1973. My right leg is much better and only about 1 inch short now.
In January 2005, I took a promotion with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) with the Office of Pesticide Programs as an Information Management Specialist. After 17 years of that, I retired in May 2022. 52 years of work (including 35 years of government bureaucracy) was enough.
