I loved being a kid in Daly City, California. Great memories of riding bikes and skateboards... building wooden cars to ride down those hilly streets... playing dodge-ball and kick-ball at school. Favorite scary TV shows of that time were Creature Features, Night Gallery, and Kolchak the Nightstalker. I learned to play the trumpet in 4th grade. The early 1970's was a time of good, simple fun under the shadow of cold and misty San Bruno Mountain. The 6 years I lived in Daly City were my favorite times.
When my family moved to San Jose in 1976, I had a tough time adjusting to the hotter summers here. I really missed the fog and drizzle of Daly City! But I kept busy with the concert bands and orchestra at school.
In 1979, I joined the Vanguard Drum & Bugle Corp. (similar to marching band). I played soprano bugle with the Vanguard. In the summer months, we competed against many other drum and bugle corps throughout the USA and Canada. Very intense and stressful... but we learned team...Expand for more
work and performance. Our hard work paid off; in August 1981, we won the World Championships at Montreal.
I entered the U.S. Marine Corps in late 1981, assigned to Camp Pendleton (near San Diego) sometimes traveling to Japan and Korea. I was a "grunt" (basic rifleman). I also worked as a marksmanship coach at the rifle and pistol ranges. The early 1980's was mostly quiet & peaceful, no wars, no conflict (except for the 1983 terrorist bombing in Beirut).
After 4 years in the Marines, I worked as a welder at Accurate Metals Inc. assembling main frame computers. I enjoyed the job, but needed steadier work, so in 1986 I got a job at the San Jose Post Office. I have operated all kinds of mail sorting machines here over the past 23 years. I work indoors so I don't get hassled by the weather and DOGS! I'm pretty satisfied with this job. I can retire from the Postal Service in about 9 years.
My wife is a registered nurse at Kaiser Permanente, and we have 2 wonderful boys. Nathaniel is 12 and would like to be an auto mechanic someday. He is also a big Star Wars buff. Joseph is 11 and is interested in biology and archaeology. He is the ultimate Indiana Jones fan. They both play instruments in the school orchestra, just like I did.
We like video games, building with Lego blocks, and riding bikes in the neighborhood streets and trails. In Winter, we head up into the mountains for ski and sledding trips. Being with my boys makes me feel like a kid again. Life is good!
