Lowell's Story

Life I received my BS in physics from Whitworth College, Spokane, WA, in 1953 and my PhD in biophysics from the University of Rochester (NY) in 1958. In 1951-52, during the Korean War, my Air National Guard unit was activated and I served out my enlistment in France, delaying my undergraduate education by a year. After an eleven-year appointment as biophysicist at Argonne National Laboratory in Illinois, I joined the Department of Medical Physics at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in 1969. There I was head of Brachytherapy Physics until my retirement in 1998. I am now Member, Emeritus at MSKCC and, since I live nearby, go in occasionally for an hour or two. My daughter, Ilse, is a physician specializing in medical genetics at the U. of Tennessee, Knoxville, and my son, Kurt, is an attorney in Middletown, NJ. They each have two children. My wife, Faye, originally from the Philippines, is a dietitian, retired from New York Hospital. In 1989, I was made a Fellow of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine and in 2000 I received the Coolidge Award, the AAPM's highest honor. Prior to my retirement most of our travel was related to scientific or medical meetings, including a number at cities in Europe or Asia. We would typically book a tour, or sometimes go on our own, directly after the meeting. Since retirement, we have managed a vacation trip with a commercial tour company nearly every spring, the most recent being a river cruise in 2008 from Switzerland to Belgium on the Rhine. Our 2009 cruise, in the summer with the same company, was from Moscow to St. Petersburg on various Russian waterways, including Lakes Onega and Ladoga, the two largest lakes in Europe. We have also attended a number of AAPM meetings during the summer, in various cities around the United States. Rather than sit through the ...Expand for more
scientific sessions, we take all the companion tours that are offered and attend all the social functions, a great way to meeting with old friends. In 2005 the AAPM meeting was in Seattle, and we attended so that I could be interviewed by a member of the AAPM history committee, actually my good friend and colleague in Medical Physics at Memorial Hospital. The video recording of that interview comprises a compact summary of my education and career. It is available online. We live across the street from the campus of Rockefeller University, where, each Friday at noon, from September through June, there is a free recital for people associated with Memorial Sloan-Kettering, New York Hospital or Rockefeller U. About half are piano performances, which inspires my own attempts to learn to play better. My preference in classical music is for Chopin, and in popular music for songs written circa 1918-1920. My other principal hobby is learning Japanese via computer programs, Rocket Japanese for conversational language and Rosetta Stone to develop familiarity with the written language (kanji, hiragana and katakana). I have a number of friends who are Japanese, and I would like eventually to be able to correspond with them in their own language. School When my parents sent me to first grade they advised me never to fight with anyone "unless he hits you first." On the playground I was approached one day by a much bigger kid who said "Wanna fight?" I dutifully responded "I can't unless you hit me first" and he obliged by decking me with one blow. My biggest crush was a mutual one in Miss Geyser's second grade class, with a little girl named Donna; we took devious paths to the wastebasket and dropped love notes on each other's desks. I think my subsequent love of reading was inspired by the stories Miss Geyser read to us.
