Lowell Anderson:  

Life I received my BS in physics from Whitworth College, Spokane, WA, in 1953 and my PhD in biophysics from the University of Rochester (NY) in 1958. In 1951-52, during the Korean War, my Air National Guard unit was activated and I served out my enlistment in France, delaying my undergraduate education by a year. After an eleven-year appointment as biophysicist at Argonne National Laboratory in Illinois, I joined the Department of Medical Physics at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in 1969. There I was head of Brachytherapy Physics until my retirement in 1998. I am now Member, Emeritus at MSKCC and, since I live nearby, go in occasionally for an hour or two. My daughter, Ilse, is a physician specializing in medical genetics at the U. of Tennessee, Knoxville, and my son, Kurt, is an attorney in Middletown, NJ. They each have two children. My wife, Faye, originally from the Philippines, is a dietitian, retired from New York Hospital. In 1989, I was made a Fellow of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine and in 2000 I received the Coolidge Award, the AAPM's highest honor. Prior to my retirement most of our travel was related to scientific or medical meetings, including a number at cities in Europe or Asia. We would typically book a tour, or sometimes go on our own, directly after the meeting. Since retirement, we have managed a vacation trip with a commercial tour company nearly every spring, the most recent being a river cruise in 2008 from Switzerland to Belgium on the Rhine. Our 2009 cruise, in the summer with the same company, was from Moscow to St. Petersburg on various Russian waterways, including Lakes Onega and Ladoga, the two largest lakes in Europe.
