Luis's Story

My school journey took a few unexpected turns, but each experience became part of my story. I began my education at Holy Name School before transferring to Powell Elementary School. During elementary school, I suffered an ankle injury that required me to finish part of the school year through home instruction. After recovering, I was accepted into the C.H.I.P.S. (Challenging High Intelligence Potential Students) Program and became part of the very first fifth-grade class at Forest Hill School. I returned the following year for sixth grade. Since Forest Hill only served students through sixth grade at the time, I completed middle school at Pyne Poynt Family School. I then attended Camden High School, where I was involved in the ASPIRA Club. My favorite electives were Art, Drama, and Spanish, which allowed me to express my creativity and connect with others. During my junior year, my life changed when my family moved to Puerto Rico due to personal circumstances. I later returned to Camden for about a year before life events led me back to Puerto Rico permanently. Although my educational path was different from what I had originally expected, I remained determined to continue my education. I completed my high school education through an alternative education program for adults at Centros Sor Isolina Ferré. The Department of Education of Puerto Rico certified me with a High...Expand for more
School Diploma. After completing high school, I continued pursuing my interests in beauty and creativity by enrolling at Instituto de Banca y Comercio, now known as Northbridge University. There, I studied Cosmetology and developed skills in the beauty industry. Although my journey through the program took an unexpected path, I continued building my experience and later completed my Nail Technician course, earning my certification. Throughout my life, learning has continued beyond the classroom. I have built a career in customer service, transaction processing, healthcare support, and self-employment as a hair braider. For more than two decades, I have worked with clients, combining creativity, entrepreneurship, and customer service into a profession that has allowed me to connect with many people. Outside of work, I enjoy technology, learning new skills, learning with and about AI, playing video games, and studying Japanese. I believe it is never too late to keep learning, grow, and explore new opportunities. Looking back, life did not follow the path I imagined when I used to spend my time in the libraries of Camden schools, but every challenge, change, and accomplishment helped shape the person I am today. I hope everyone from those school days has found happiness and success in their own journey. It would be great to reconnect and see where life has taken everyone.
