John's Story
Life
I majored in linguistics and Japanese language (hey, it was the 80's and we all thought then Japan would control the world economy). After I finished college, I went to Japan to live and work (3 years) to improve my language skills. It was an interesting place to live, but kind of stressful because people never really accept you there. With electronics, we have just caught up to what I saw 20 years ago (HDTV and pocket cell phones). I guess I got the travel bug, and ended up studying in Germany and working in Russia. Russia was quite another experience. In between those stays abroad, I lived out in LA for a year too. I taught English while I lived in Japan and Russia. I got my masters in TESOL about 10 years ago. I stopped traveling/living abroad then. After that, I worked full time in marketing services for 2 different companies using my languages, and taught ESL part time at a few local community colleges. Now I am a full time program administrator at Westchester Community College. I am currently teaching myself Spanish. I wished I had learned it when I was younger.
Oh, yeah, I legally changed my first and middle names 13 years ago. That's another story.
I am single now, but was in a serious relationship for 10 years that didn't work out. After I got back from Europe, I lived with my parents to help take care of my...Expand for more
dad. He was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 1982, and was totally bed ridden by the early 1990's. He finally passed in 2002 due to complications from his illness.
My dreams for the future are simple. Right now, I just want to buy my own home in Westchester (but it's all too expensive) or a little further north, and go on for my doctorate in linguistics or second-language acquisition. I am not up for the all the work, and spending all that time & money I would have to put into it, but I would love to have some nice 10 month facutly gig with tenure at a college somewhere. My ultimate dream would be to live in Puerto Rico. I love it there, but there are few opportunities to find decent employment.
I thank you if you have read this much and have not gotten bored. I hope things are going great for you, and maybe one day we will run into each other, and hopefully recognize each other. Take care and best wishes.
March 2012 Update:
Back in a serious relationship going on 3 years. Very happy. Live in the Riverdale section of the Bronx. Got accepted to 2 doctoral programs in 2009 and decided on the one in Adult Education at Teachers College, Columbia University. Finished the coursework and am working on my dissertation. Can't wait to get done with it. In the mean time, just enjoying life and learning as much as I can.
