Lynette's Story

Life After graduating highschool in 1983 (that's before PC's, kids), I had plans to fix the world. But once I got to college, I found that it couldn't be fixed. Or maybe it was my GPA that couldn't be fixed. Hard to remember. Not to mention, my birth-mother found me in 1985 during my junior year - yes, a minor development. But alas, college was not for me. Or not ready for me. One of those. So I left in 1986 to pursue my dream of being a fantastically rich and excruciatingly lazy singer. Alas, that dream is only for a very select few non-talents (if MTV is any judge). So I became a mildly semi-known singer in Boston. Being a drinking and college town, I was promptly frightened by my own frat-boy binge-drinking fans and did the only logical thing I could do: I married my drummer. So after years of late night singing and rock photography, I tired of the glamour of shrieking into crappy sound systems that barely competed with the huge stacks of amps and did the only thing I could do: got pregnant (twice!). And since I couldn't even do the rock-singer thing right (I mean, hey, I didn't drink, I didn't do drugs, I had my children AFTER I was married - what kind of episode of Behind The Music would THAT make?!), I have since concentrated on raising my sons and pretending that a career in programming for a major financial corporation is exactly what I want. In 2007, I became a single mom. The nice thing is, God loves me and is making me stronger with each day. So don't cry for me Argentina! My kids are the cutest things that I've ever done. I'm warm and well fed. I've got friends and family that I can count on no matter what and I am loved. It don't get no better 'n that, man. School School....it's a love/hate thing. I was an IBM brat so moved a lot. So I don't have ties to one town's schools like some have. I did most of elementary school at Barlow Mountain in CT. Very cool place, if my selective memory serves. I have fond memories of chasing boys on the playground, kissing them and running away. I probably should have used that tactic in my 20's. But I digress. I spent 5th grade in Boston, MA. I barely remember names from that year but loved the school. We got every Jewish and Christian holiday off - nothing better! Back to CT for 6th grade which was weird. One year can form bonds and divisions that are hard to return to. I started Jr high in CT but - after my dad's death during...Expand for more
7th grade - we moved to NY mid-year. Did half of 8th grade there, too. Moved back to a different town in CT mid-yr in 8th grade. Had some great times there in New Fairfield High and stayed long enough to graduate. Those were the hardest and best times. You couldn't pay me to go back but I'd love to visit! College Ah...college. Finally free of parental control and old enough to do some real damage. What a wonderful concept. My freshman yr began discovering exactly why I never drank in the first place (I recall puking on a tree outside of my dorm). With that out of the way, I began discovering the wonderfully unproductive social side of college. I'm pretty sure I had a crush on every guy that went there while I was there. It's probably best most of them didn't know. I learned to take a great photo during those years. I learned that walking right up to a person and telling them you think they're interesting/cool/whatever can actually make friends. I learned the difference between a great teacher and a person with subject expertise who should be stripped of all teaching degrees. I learned what real friends were and that there's no one denomination that is the RIGHT WAY. I learned that honesty is usually the best policy but you still get your butt kicked out of school if you break certain rules (I watched the shuttle explode while said butt-kicking was being explained to me by my hall director). My junior year started off with a phone call from my birth-mother ("Hi, my name is April and I think I'm your birth-mother..."). So the rest of that year was pretty much an emotional and educational bust. Wouldn't trade that for all the 4.0's in the world! I also learned that singing in front of huge standing-room only crowds can make you feel like barfing non-stop until you pass out but when it works, MAN, nothing equals that! I learned what real music was (thanks to Chodat, Mullins, and Collins). I cut hair to make a little cash and am - in hind-sight - greatly humored at the horrid 80's do's I did. I made some amazing friends and I guess I learned a bit about math, computers, physics, education, and how NOT to study. In the end, I quit after my junior yr. But to get the last word, after I quit, they sent me a letter saying I was suspended for 2 trimesters. Something about my GPA needing to be on the positive side of the number scale..... Workplace I work to live. Not the other way around.
