Lynette's Story

Life Shortly after graduation I spent the summer in Palo Alto, CA. My cousins and I spent alot of time in San Francisco, in the Haight-Ashbury district. What a different world that was :) Lots of fun!! I came back in Sept and married Raleigh Lopez. We had our first child, Angela in 1968. Raleigh worked at Inland, and found out soon, that was not the life for him. He put an application into the Gary Fire Dept. and got hired as soon as he turned 21. He went to college while in the fire dept and graduated in 1974. We had Raleigh Jr. in 1970. I worked part time jobs, typed college papers for Raleigh, and watched my children---while he was in college. Raleigh got hired by the sheriffs dept as a patrolman and worked laison for the Drug Administration in Chicago. Raleigh got hired by DEA in 1978 as a Special Agent. I went to Real Estate school and got my Real Estate Licence. I worked as a Real Estate agent for two years in Griffith. Someone I knew asked me if I'd be interested in Working for Amoco Oil Refinery, stating they needed to start hiring woman. When I found out what the pay and benefits were, I couldn't resist. I was hired and was of the first female process operators in the Heavy Oils Div. While there Raleigh got several promotions at DEA and we had two more boys in 1980 and 1982, Marcelino and Erik. Raleigh got another promotion with a transfer to Atlanta, GA in 1985. I quit Amoco Oil and we moved to Atlanta, GA. Raleigh was working out of Quantico/FBI School as an in- structor for International Training for DEA. He travel- led the ...Expand for more
world over, and I was a stay at home mom for a while. Then things kind of blew up! We were seperated, my 6 year old son got Leukemia, and we eventually divorced in 1988. The kids and I moved back to Indiana, couldn't get my job back at Amoco, so I went to school to become a Medical Asst. I went back with Raleigh to VA for 3 years, BIG mistake, and he was transferred back to Chicago in 1993 with a very good promotion, so we all moved back to Ind. I worked for Hammond Clinic, and finally left Raleigh for good in 1995. He passed away suddenly in 1997, his youngest sons were only 15 and 16. He was third in charge of the DEA Office in Chicago, when he died. He was very good at his job, and well liked, therefore, he had a huge funeral with the Bag Pipes, Honorary Guard and a representative from every law enforcement dept in a 50 mile radius. Agents came from all over the US, and it was quite a tribute to him. At the funeral luncheon we listened to a live Mariachi band and everyone had a shot of Tequila in his honor. He always said he wanted to go out with a Bang, so we honored his wish :) I was was working for Retina Vitreous when he died and ended up leaving there to take a job in a Family Practice Satellite office in Calumet City. I worked there until 2006 and quit due to Psoriatic Arthritis and complications of the disease. I applied for and was awarded SS Disability and moved back to Virginia with my older son and his family. I moved back to Indiana Oct. of 2008. I missed the rest of my family and friends. It's good to be home again.
