Lynn's Story
Life
My family includes, among others, two younger sisters and a "baby" brother. Married September 1974. We have a daughter and a son and a home in Latham, NY. Our two children are both married and out on their own now. We have 7 grandchildren - 6 girls and one boy ranging in age from almost 16 years to 2 years. My husband and I are looking forward to retirement and spending more time doing the things we enjoy AND more time with the grandkids. Since retiring in 2009, I enjoy my time home with my husband and our crazy cat (Riddler) and bloodhound (Bones). I provide daycare for my son's children during the school year and try to have my daughter's children visit as often as possible. Waiting for the day (coming soon) when my husband retires and we do a little traveling.
School
I started school in 1957 and attended K-2 at Heatly in Green Island then the family moved to Maplewood so I finished 3-8 there. School wasn't much fun for me. Wasn't accepted by the "popular" crowd. Was too thin, not very attractive and very, very shy. My parents didn't have the money to spend on all the newest, hippest clothes, shoes and gadgets like a lot of the other kids and they laughed at me and snickered behind my back a lot. I thought I was stupid most of my school life. I finally woke up in my Junior year and decided to ignore the idiots and enjoy what I...Expand for more
had left of school. Funny - the same people who looked down on "being from Maplewood" are the same people who either moved there or paid high tuition to put their own children thru school there.
College
"College is for boys, girls don't need college - it's a waste of money. Go be a secretary or work for the phone company." These were the words of my father. So, I never went to college. I have been fortunate enough, however, to take a few college courses offered through my employment in State Service and that opportunity has enabled me to pass several Civil Service Exams and to seek and attain promotions over the years.
Workplace
Started NYS service as a stenographer in the summer of 1970 (much to the surprise of my Secretarial Practice teacher, Mary Sweeney Walker, who never thought I'd even pass the Civil Service Test) for the State Education Department. In 1980, I took a promotion and the Office of General Services Design and Construction Group. Since 2001 I've been with the OGS Office of Project Control where I've served on the committee that selects firms that contract with the State to conduct HazMat testing and monitoring in NYS facilities. I manage the testing/monitoring program and estimate/arrange/assign and approve the work that needs to be done. I retired from State Service in 2009.
Military
Never served in the Armed Forces.
