Lynne's Story

My close family has been my greatest joy. I have 4 children, 9 grandchildren, and 6 great-grandchildren. The adults are healthy, happy, and have done well in their professional careers. We are very fortunate. Growing up in Ardsley in 1945 till 1957: Life then was simple. My parents bought a small bungalow for $5000 which was previously owned by the high school history teacher. The house sat on a 50’ x 100’ lot on a dead end street. The driveway was shared with our neighbor. The home was small but it boasted a beautiful stone wood burning fireplace. The kitchen was so small that our non-self-defrosting refrigerator was positioned down 4 steps that led to the back door. The fridge did not have a freezer, just a small compartment housing an ice cube tray. One of my neighbors had to have blocks of ice delivered to keep their food cold. The arrival of the “ice man” was a big event. My family was fortunate to have a gas stove. Another neighbor used an iron wood stove for cooking. We did not have a dishwasher or clothes washer. My mother was fortunate to be able to afford a laundry service that came each week to pick up dirty clothes and deliver clean clothes and sheets. Sleeping on freshly ironed sheets was wonderful. There was no grocery chain nearby. But, there was a butcher and a small deli. We had dairy products delivered by “Bor...Expand for more
den’s” and bakery items delivered by “Duggans”.. There was also a local pharmacy with a lunch counter. We always had cats—but did not buy “cat food”—they ate raw ground beef and any mice they caught. The house had a coal burning furnace. The coal man delivered coal thru the basement window to a wooden enclosure. Of course, the coal had to be fed into the furnace regularly. I remember the exposed pipes in the basement were wrapped in asbestos. My father also insisted on using lead paint in and outside the house. (Fortunately, this has not affected my health.). The house was not “decorated” the way homes are today. Furniture was just for sleeping, eating off of, sitting, and storing things. Many years later, I purchased the house from my father. I did the best I could to update the home. Returning to having a residence in Ardsley gave me the opportunity to apply for the job opening of Village Treasure (which I achieved). The position was great, but my husband’s health was failing. So, I sold the family home and left my job to find a different life for us. We moved to the North Country 6 miles from the Canadian Border below Montreal. We purchased a log home in the woods. My husband found a great doctor and his health improved. The next 7 years, till his death were the best years of our life, I stayed in the North Country for 20 years.
