M.E.'s Story

I was born in New York City, was raised in Plainfield went to college in Washington D.C. and never left! I happily live with my husband of 21 years and have two wonderful stepdaughters and one granddaughter. I have many, many memories of St. Mary's K-6th grades. I actually wrote a chapter reflecting on my experiences in “A good education and the fear of God” in Irvine, J.J. and Foster, M. (Ed) New York: Teachers College Press 1996 The African American Experience in Roman Catholic Schools (1996). Although my family moved to the "east end" and I completed 7th and 8th grades at St. Bernard's I identify with St. Mary's class of 1964. While I enjoyed teaching at the elementary level for a few years my career path took me to education research and policy and I received my doctorate from Catholic University. My work to this day has been in the area of teacher education and teacher quality with a focus on issues of equity and diversity. By and large, I have worked for national non-profit education organizations and have done a fair amount of research and writing. I recently completed an edited volume on Millennial Teachers of Color with Harvard Education Press (2018). It’s based on the premise that there are big differences among generations, especially between baby boomers and the millennials. My experience in education has come in very handy as I am volunteer coordinator of St. Augustine Sunday School.
