Magdalena's Story
UPDATED OCTOBER 2011--
Family: I've been married to Richard since June 14, 1968 (43 years). He is a graduate of the U of M in civil engineering (1961). CA license in civil engineering; still working. The economy has hit us pretty hard, but we are hanging in there. We moved to Davis, CA so I could attend UCDavis. Then discovered that we liked living in this area, and stayed. We have two children (daughter & son are both artists, as is their dad). Daughter Shirley has a 13 year old daughter; son Henry has a 9 year old son. We thoroughly enjoy our children and grandchildren; happy that they live close by and that we see them often.
Ed: AA Foothill College in 1972 in Cultural Anthropology (includes 2 quarters from the U of M). BA UCDavis in Geography 1975. UCDavis credential program (multiple subject & and secondary social studies)1985. UCD 2 years postgrad in Geography.I am a firm believer in lifelong learning. . .
Personal: Reading but not writing. I have had health problems that have seriously curtailed my work, social, and community activities. I really enjoy hearing from old friends, but only "visit" via email and Facebook now..
Politics & philosophy: "Still crazy after all these years!" I still cannot watch the news without yelling at the TV! Still "liberal" on most issues; still hate getting mired in endless wars. And I am extremely disappointed in the cutbacks in funding for educa...Expand for more
tion from pre-K through college, as well as in cutbacks in social services. And don't get me started on the "new" peripheral canal (whatever it is, it is still a water "grab"). Still interested in almost everything and anything, which is why I find Geography and the Arts so fascinating. My "zen" is paper arts and crafts; learning the history, the process, creating (and teaching).
A note about Geography: I have been asked "why geography?" My interest in geography started when I was 7 years old when I traveled to Holland with my mother and siblings to visit my mother's parents in Rotterdam. My mother grew up and lived through WWII in Rotterdam. My father was a soldier in the US Army when he met my mother. They married, and thus my mother became a "War Bride". They moved to the Santa Clara Valley where my father was raised, and then moved to E. Palo Alto. My father's father was from the Island of St. Helena, and his mother was from Puerto Rico. I grew up in this mix of cultures in my family, as well as in the diversity of cultures in E. Palo Alto. Although in high school I was interested in poetry, writing and philosophy, I discovered that cultural and social geography provided the knowledge that answered the strong Where and Why questions that were such an integral part of my life. Geography is a very satisfying field of study for anyone who is interested in almost everything!!
