Mandy's Story

Life After graduating highschool I went on to The University of Toronto where I got a bachelor's degree. I worked in the hotel industry for a few years while attempting to launch an acting career. After trying various "back-up" jobs I became a flight attendant for Wardair (remember them?!) Having the restless nature I did, at the age of 28 I returned to college to become a registered nurse. Again, I thought of this new venture as a "back-up" for my acting. Well, it's served me well over the years; when I'm not getting much "thespian" work I nurse more, when the cameras roll I get to remove the latex gloves. I've also had the good fortune of a stand-up comedy career (from 1991 to 1999). On August 24th 2002 I finally got married, for the first time. My mother's relieved that she was still alive to witness it. Greg and I moved to Nanaimo which is on Vancouver Island spontaneously after spending our honeymoon renting a cottage on the Ocean. We came across a condo for sale right on the harbour and once we saw what you get for your money there was no going back to the big city life of Vancouver. To think that I started out in downtown Toronto! Now I do theatre part-time and teach a Residential Care Attendant Course for The Academy of Learning. I've got the best of both worlds - security and creativity. Two years ago we bought a beautiful house up on a hill/mountain, we look down at Long Lake, a truly heavenly view. We get to watch people waterski, kayak, and fish, while we eat dinner on our deck. There are two float planes that take off and land regularly. One of our neighbours (a doc...Expand for more
tor) flies his own helicopter to work in Vancouver each morning. He's usually flying past as I'm getting into or out of the tub; oh well, he's seen a lot of bodies... We're getting ready to sell our house and move back into a condo down near the water;we'll be mortgage-free with money in the bank and I'll be able to start auditioning again for commercials and tv work. One thing I've learned from nursing; life is too short to not be true to yourself and go after your dreams. So here's to the future! I hope you're pursuing yours too. UPDATE: We sold the house and have downsized back to condo living. Much less housework involved so I'm smiling a whole lot more. Already put a one-act Neil Simon comedy on in the condo clubhouse for my fellow residents! That was fun. In a few weeks I'll be done teaching and free to just pursue professional auditions again. If in the coming months you notice anyone looking a wee bit crazy on that t.v. commercial, look twice; it may be your one and only! Another Unpdate: My timing's always a wee bit off... the week I started back to prof. auditioning is when the tv writers went on strike. Back and forth by ferry to Vancouver for acting classes and the odd audition. After 4 months and a depletion of savings I decided to pursue another long-time passion Real Estate. Wrote my exam in August and am now a licensed Real Estate Agent working for Coast Realty Group in Nanaimo. So if you know of anyone moving here please forward them my name. Of course the market's softening a bit right now but I think this is a good test for me and a good time to really learn.
