Mandy's Story

Life Hmmmm....where to begin and what to tell :) I am currently working for a non-profit agency in Hillsboro, OR, called Youth Contact. My primary job is that of a Program Coordinator for a mandated divorce transition group for kids & families called Kids' Turn. I LOVE this program. For those of you who are familiar with divorce and the impact it has on everyone in a family you will know how important it is to provide a safe place for kids and parents to talk about the changes and the importance of teaching positive communication and coping skills. I teach primarily the little kids (5-8) but do teach all age groups including parent groups. Outside of teaching the classes, my role is to aquire staff, schedule 5 sites throughout our county, and maintain a running schedule of classes on a year round basis. When I am not doing that, I also do part-time outpatient therapy for youth and their families. Again, our primary focus is to bring kids and their parents together by finding their strengths and assisting them to positively find solutions to the challenges they face. The other factor I LOVE LOVE LOVE about my job is that I work M-Th. I have long days but, seriously, cannot imagine life without 3 day weekends...especially since I am still in a 2 year recovery from graduate school...some of you may know what I am talking about!! In the past year my parents have moved from Kalispell and relocated to Albany, OR, about 70 miles south of Portland. The transtion has been extremely positive for all of us. It is the first time we have lived in this close of proximity since I was 20 years old. Yes, there have been adjustments made - but, again, ultimately a positive move for...Expand for more
everyone. Other than work, I have been working towards finding balance in my personal life between being on the bottom of the financial totem pole and enjoying the plentiful life Oregon has to offer. This year, I have allowed myself many new adventures traveling and doing more then I have in all the 8 years I have lived out here...and, yes, my parents have had a lot to do with that. I have lived in the same apartment complex for 4 years (I even worked there during graduate school) it is truly the first time I feel I have had roots planted since leaving Kalispell at 18. I love living on my own. My current apartment is perfect for me - my parents call it the "tree house" because it is on the top floor and is surrounded by old growth trees. There is a lake that is right behind my building that has also brought a lot of serenity to my life. Again, a true Montana girl at heart. I have a wonderful community of friends, some I have maintained since college at the University of Montana others have come through work and life here in OR. I do have occassion to cross paths with Renee McLean (now Dr. Chang) as well as Krista Ausenhus. Amazing how small the world really is!! Being single in my 30's has proven to be an enlightening and growing experience. Out of it I am learning to be very grateful for everything that I DO have. I have groups of friends for every facet of my personality, I have a job that is fulfilling and that I learn from every day, I love exploring and having the freedom to seek out new adventures on a whim. I love the peace, security and comfort my apartment brings me. It may not be the life I had always imagined I would have but I am blessed in it everyday!
