Marc's Story
Life
I hope everyone is well. As for me I have been very busy the past...35+ years!! Unbelievable, whoever thought we'd ever be this old?! I spent seven-and-a-half years in the US Air Force. I had a great job in the AF and traveled all over Europe, Asia and Africa. I left the military and went to work for State Farm. I completed my teaching credential and have switched careers, I am now a high school social studies teacher and football coach in Porterville, CA. I married in 1989 to a wonderful woman Coleen, and we have two GREAT kids! Our son, Austin, was born in 1991, he has decided to follow his parents into military service with the Air Force, he now lives in Maryland; and our daughter, Megan was born in 1995. In addition, many of you may not realize (or remember,or even care!) that I no longer use the name "Atkinson." My name is Marc Salazar, that change took place my senior year.
I was glad to see many of you at the 10, 20, & 30 year reunions, I had a great time with all of you and managed to make acquaintances that I didn't know in high school...funny how time changes perspectives and evens out the fields! I have no idea what the future holds for me but I am considering several different options from school administration to politics. I am also blessed with still being in contact with a large number of my friends from high school. School
Once a Komet, always a Komet! I had a great time in High School, in spite of my grades. My favorite teacher taught my least favorite subject, how strange is that? Mrs. Phillips was my English teacher for three years, I hated the class but thought the world of her. Other memories include football friends and Friday nights, wrestling, track, pep rallies, dances, and lunch time on the front lawn. I also have to mention that Drama with all those friends, and "Cactus Jack" Winans was way too much fun too! High school was a great time in my life and all of my friends from this time are still a big part of the man I have become, all of you were so important to me. I still enjoy the occasional trip back to the ol' campus just to wander and remember!
College

working and paying a mortgage, for both the Bachelors (96) and Masters (03) degrees! But, I managed to get it done, never thought I'd ever even go to college, let alone graduate.
Workplace
High School teacher, greatest job on the planet! I would do this work for free, if I had independent wealth, but as it stands I NEED the money! I have taught everything in the social studies realm. In addition I coach football, golf, and baseball. I am much harder on my students than a lot of my teachers were on me! My motto for students, "do as I say, not as I have done!" I have way too much fun to call what I do work! I found something that I am good at and then I found people to pay me to do it, that is the key to professional happiness! I have taught in a few schools since earning my credential, Como Park High School, St Paul, MN, 1996 - 1999 (wife's job transfer, see what love will do to you!), San Pasqual High School, Escondido, CA 1999 - 2007. Golden West High School in Visalia, CA.where I taught World History, Video Production, PE, and Head Football Coach, 2007 - 2011. I am currently a Social Studies teacher and Head Football Coach at Granite Hills High School, Porterville, CA.
Military
My military bio...too much to say in this small space, suffice to say that the best thing I ever did was to enlist, the worst thing I ever did was to reenlist! Spent my time as a Security Police Officer, cool job when you are a young kid, kinda rough when you get a little older. The best assignment I had was RAF Greenham Common, England. I loved it there so much that I stayed five years...two years past my original assignment! I played football in the United Kingdom too! Both for the base I was at and for a local European team! Turned out I played ball ten months a year, it was a riot! I managed to travel all over Europe and even managed to make a trip or two to Egypt and Saudi Arabia. While in England I made friends that will be with me for a lifetime! We worked and played so hard there, sometimes I wish I were still there with those same people. My other assignments, well there was Grand Forks, ND, now that was a lot of COLD snow! It was a a nice place to visit, but...well you know. The other assignment was Dyess AFB, Abilene, TX, now that was truly horrible assignment and the reason I decided to get out! West Texas was a pit for me! I left active duty in December 1989.
