It is often said that taking the beaten path is beaten for a reason and embarking on it can never be considered a bad decision. The unbeaten path however, often has more surprises, more interesting stop-points and an element of unsurpassed uncertainty and intrigue. It can also have fewer travelers and, at times, be isolating or alienating. Finally, no traveler wants or expects to stay on the unbeaten path forever and spending time on the beaten path has many attributes, not the least of which is preparation and the creation of confidence. After high school, I went on to SUNY Stony Brook and spent the better part of a decade there going to college and medical school and, three years later, briefly serving as an attending physician there too.
