Marcia's Story

Life Right after college I married Roger Lawton and we were married for 12 years and had two children. Although we did get divorced, we have remained on friendly terms over the years. After about two years of single life, I then got married again to Don Hopkins, who I met at work; he was a business manager for a school system where I worked in Human Resources and we have been happily married for 22 years. He is 14 years older than I am, and he started his family very early, so his two sons are almost as old as I am. His sons live in Florida and both have children, so I do have 4 step-grandchildren, ranging in age from 28 to 16 and actually, gasp!, a step great-grandchild! My husband retired in May, 2005 but has been quite busy since then; most recently he went to New Orleans for almost three weeks to assist with hurricane/flood cleanup, and he has another trip there planned next month to work with Habitat For Humanity on construction of homes. This has been very rewarding for him. For myself, I got a master's a few years after DePauw and I've been working in Human Resources Management for my whole career. Right now I am an Employee Relations Specialist for a big bank, and I handle very complex and sensitive cases where there is litigation involved, or where there is serious misconduct, etc. My territory is Indianapolis, Cincinnati, Chicago, Kansas City, and then a number of smaller areas throughout the middle part of the U.S. Fortunately, I can do most of wha...Expand for more
t I need over the phone or by e-mail, so my traveling is less than you might think and in fact, although I do have an office downtown, I am usually able to work from home, which is wonderful. And, I like the work. My son Michael (who went to DePauw too) is 30, and he got married two years ago. He and his wife Kelley live in Roanoke Virginia, and they are both in her family's business, which is creating, selling, installing and supporting software for police departments and municipalities. No kids on the way yet, but there is a lot of kidding on their part about being on the verge. My daughter is 28 and is a marine toxicologist and works for a private firm doing remediation of toxic spills. She just moved to Cleveland, where her boyfriend lives, after living in Chicago and Charleston, S.C. for a few years. I have lived in Indianapolis for most of my adult life, and I like it here, although the State of Indiana embarrasses me almost daily with its backward ways (I am one of only two liberals in the state; my husband is the other). My hobbies are reading, home improvement, music, computers and travel. A trip is planned to Russia this year and to China next year, and my 2005 resolution is to visit each continent at least once. I have an iPod with 7100 songs on it; I have transferred all my vinyl and am working on my cassettes. You'd probably be surprised, my favorites songs are those on my extensive "alternative and indie" playlist. That's my life at the moment.
