Marcia's Story
I was born in Ft. Lauderdale where I lived until my family moved to Stuart Florida when I was a junior in high school. Although I did not graduate from Ft. Lauderdale High, I was a "Flying L" for one year and have many fond memories of that school. As I said, my family moved to Stuart, Florida, where I went on to make many friends and enjoy my two years at Martin County High. After graduation I went to Cleveland, Ohio, where I attended and graduated from the Cleveland Institute of Music with a Bach. of Music in piano performance. I moved back to Ft. Lauderdale where I taught piano and performed.
I began teaching school at Lauderhill Paul Turner Elementary where I taught for four years before the mountains of WNC began calling to me. I picked up and moved to the mountains that I loved to spend summers in during my childhood. I moved to Maggie Valley, NC which is literally at the foot of the Smoky Mts. National Park in Haywood County. Our county is rather small. I began teaching music at Clyde Elementary and other schools in the county and taught here for 29 and 1/2 years.

s I formed a group of singers and cloggers that traveled all over the eastern states performing. They were young children from elementary thru junior high school ages. In 1979 we were called and asked to perform on a Christmas special from the Grand Ole Opry on ABC. We were in rehearsal for five days with Barbara and Louise Mandrell, the Statlers, the Gatlins, Ronnie Milsaps, among others. WHAT A WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE! The gentleman who wrote Coward of the County lives in Asheville and saw us perform and that is how all of that came about.
What a wonderful career I have had but all things come to an end and in 2002 I retired from teaching. I am now the director of music at Clyde First Baptist Church and enjoying that very much.
I have enjoyed reading some of the bios on this site and really enjoy seeing where everyone is. I have found that three of my former classmates or almost classmates live very close to me. One lives in Winston Salem, one lives west of me and one lives on seventeen miles east of me in Candler.
Best to all of you out there and I'm hoping the years have been great to each of you.
