Marcus's Story

Life I live in Champaign, IL with my wife, 2 daughters, and 2 cats. I just bought my first house and am loving the process of making it "mine" thru all the little projects here and there. I work for Volition, where I design video games that are published by THQ on the Xbox360, Playstation3, and PC. I'm deliriously happy here and am very glad I moved away from CA, but I do miss my old stomping grounds from time to time. It was hard leaving friends and family, but you have to go where life takes you. School The list of crushes I had is too long to list. Monroe had some amazingly hot women going there. So many, in fact, that I found it hard to concentrate on schoolwork most of the time. Mr. Thomas, my Economic teacher probably inspired me the most, but Mr. Wright, who taught Stagecraft/Drama/Play Production was probably the one I miss the most. It was in his classes that I found my "voice". It's only a shame I took so long to realize it. College I didn't go to college. I did attend, for a short time, the University of Sound Arts, a trade school where I thought I'd learn to become a recording engineer for music or movies. It turned out to be a big scam, even though I did learn a lot there and had some great experiences, like being a roadie for a small club band called Electric Eyez. I did a small roadie gig for them at the Coconut Teaser one nice. My Stage Crew experience sure helped out. Thanks Mr. Wright. Workplace After high school I worked a slew of dead end jobs. I worked at the Granada Hills UA Theater from 1987-1989. After that I did phone customer service for TeleTec...Expand for more
h, which included answering calls for the TV show Unsolved Mysteries. When you saw the call center in the show, that's where I worked. I've worked at Kinko's twice, Office Depot, Home Depot, Continental Comics, and even been a telemarketer selling printer cartridges (man, that sucked). One summer I worked as a gopher for Todd Masters, a Make Up Effects artist who did a lot of work on Tales From the Crypt. I drove strippers to bachelor parties, for all of a month. I've been unemployed a lot. Now, I design video games and have been working in the video game industry since 1995. I started out as a QA Tester for Disney Interactive on the Sega Genesis game, Gargoyles. Next I worked as tech support for a kids' software company, another testing gig at NovaLogic, then spent nearly 4 years with New World Computing in Agoura Hills. I did a short contract gig with Microsoft on the Xbox Game Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge. I worked for Sony up in Bend, OR for 2 years on the Syphon Filter franchise. I left the hell that was Sony for the heaven that is Volition here in Champaign, IL. I find it funny that I ended up in Champaign, as I once seriously considered following my then major crush, Evelyn Reid, to this very city, as the University of Illinois is where she went to college. Life has a funny way of putting you where you belong doesn't it? Military At one point I considered a career in the Navy, but my eyesight and the fact that I get seasick kinda killed that. I almost enlisted during the 1st Gulf War, but luckily that didn't turn into the war everyone was getting prepared for.
