Margaret's Story
I am the oldest girl in my family. I have a younger sister and an older half brother. My mother was Irish. My father was Chinese. I had a very interesting childhood. I learned to read people at a very early age and soon realized the importance of inner strength and faith in the intangible things of life. We were not rich in material things but we were rich in values and character.
Both my parents were citizens and well educated although not rich in worldly wealth. The thing I remember most about growing up was having the family meal together. There was no such thing as eating alone or each person eating a separate or special meal. During that meal, my father would always weave in some type of ethical lesson in parable or story form. They were the building blocks of my life actually. They demonstrated love, sacrifice, perseverance, compassion, ingenuity, faith in all they did.
Whatever obstacles we faced, there was always a time to share, reflect and find solutions to the daily trials and tribulations known as life. Nothing was impossible as long as we had family and family values.
One particular instance at age 7 yrs, I stood up to my father because I disagreed with something he said, by standing up and pounding my fist down on the table. My father was a gentle, mild manner person and he responded by asking me, "Do you know who you are speaking to?" Then pointing my finger, while gazing directing up into his face and saying, "Did you or did you not say - WHEN YOU BELIEVE IN SOMETHING, YOU HAVE TO STAND UP FOR YOURSELF NO MATTER WHO OR WHERE IT IS! -- now was that true [with a quiver in my voice] or was that a lie? He quickly had me sit down to finish dinner, I don't remember the exact words or response at that time. I know we finished dinner and life went on as usual. Then when we were suppose to be asleep, I heard my mother and father talking. My mother was upset, she told him, "You better get h...Expand for more
er in check, she doesn't know her place. You're going to create a "Frankenstein"! My father responded, "Did you see her! She stood up to me! The girl is going to make it in life! When you stand against the greatest odds at age 7yr, what else can you do in life but overcome anything that comes to block your progress.
I once bragged to the Dean of my College just before graduation that my sister would be coming in the Fall and that she was the smart one in the family. She told me, "Margaret, I don't know your sister. I'm sure she is smart as you say, but let me tell you about you. You have a quality that will take you far in life, more than smarts or maney. I looked at her with a puzzled look. I don't think I ever spent a whole hour with her in 4 years. I never had her in class. How could she know me so well? Then she said, "Margaret, once you set a goal or course of action there is no power on earth that will deter you until you achieve your goal. You have persevernace and determination! Obstacles and stumbling blocks are mere opportunities for you to exercise your analytical, organizational, and people skills to get the job done. I was totally amazed and it was years before I fully realized what she told me about myself.
I am semi-retired. I spent 40 years in the Baltimore City Schools as a teacher, curriculum specialist, supervisor, assistant principal, principal, project coordinator, and mentor. It was an exciting and interesting career.
I'm writing a book - what man meant for discouragement, God meant for development and growth!
I didn't marry. I have 3 wonderful nephews and thousands of children who have grown and gone on to do great things in life. That's another book, for another time!
I'm not rich in material things but more than rich in the things that really count in life. I'm blessed with a sound mind, good health, enthusism, great stamina, and still a curiosity to learn new things.
