Margaret's Story

As the class of 1966 approaches the required age for filing for Medicare, it seems appropriate to write a little something here. When I left NHS, I was on the path to become a librarian. I met my husband at FSU, got my BA in library science and then put John through law school working at the State Library in Tallahassee. I think that's the last time we intentionally saved money every month! :-) John was hired by the IRS as a docket attorney and we moved to Buffalo NY. After several years working as and training literacy volunteers, I finally got that master's degree from SUNY/Buffalo and became a professional librarian. We adopted both of our children in Buffalo. Heather arrived early in 1979 and Matt, late in 1982. They are good kids and a real delight. John became Asst. District Counsel - still IRS - in 1987 and we moved to New Orleans. That city is a hot mess but we had a grand time there. I went back to work at Tulane Medical School Library and spent 11 years working with students and physicians from all over the country as computer research became a staple. I thought this was the best job ever and would have cheerfully retired from there this year. But that was...Expand for more
not to be. I received a call to ministry in 1993 and headed to seminary in 1999, there to work for a master of divinity. John and I divorced at the end of my first year and I was released by the Diocese of Louisiana so I didn't have to go back there for my first call. And that's how I ended up in Upper East Tennessee. My first church was St. John's in Johnson City and I moved to my current cure, St. Christopher's Kingsport, in 2007. And I do plan to retire from here, just not this year. ;-) So life is good. My kids are okay, the dogs are only slightly crazy and the cat has decided - after 8 years - that I am an acceptable person and that I can pet her. My sister, Bev, and her husband, Lee, live a little over three hours away in Charlotte and we see each other often. Mom is in good health, still living in Newark and driving cancer patients to their appointments. Helen and Barb are great, too. About every 18 to 24 months, Bev, Lee and I take off for Italy or France. We may one day go somewhere else but those two countries - especially Tuscany - have won our hearts. We are headed to Provence two weeks after Easter so I'll celebrate my birthday overseas. Grand indeed!
