Margaret's Story
If you would have asked me in high school who I was, I would have told you exactly. Where I'm from, what I believe in, and certainly where I was going.
Then I grew up, had interesting experiences, made decisions that few will ever understand, and basically took life's hiccups as they came. I always understood that choices came with consequences, and while the lessons learned were hard, I would have made the same decisions with the same information all over again, even with the same heartache.
My son, Gabriel, is the center of my life, and the two of us have made an incredible journey. In his seven years of life, we have lived in five states, from the Southeast to the Pacific Northwest, where we now live with my brother, Jake. Any of you who remember how we lived together in high school, I can tell you that while we've both grown up somewhat and continue to relish the other, we still have the same ole arguements we did in our teens. Professionally, I work as a marketing consultant for a large healthcare system. Some may remember that I took my last chemistry and biology classes at 16. Ironic! Teaching people how to be health literate--to participate in understanding their health and wellness, choose medical providers, understanding treatment plans and even purchasing their care--emerged as a passion of mine.
I stumbled across this career in Dexter when I returned home to recover from my divorce with an infant, and realized that while I thought I knew everybody here, there was so many more wonderful, inspiring people I had yet to meet. During those two years in Dexter, I found a new direction, incredible mentors and people I am blessed to call friends.
I still do many of the things I did in high school -- play my old instruments in my room when nobody is listening, golf when I can, read constantly, argue with anybody (as Jake points out, I can make up an answer to anything), and even sing bad kerokee.
