Margi's Story

My schools include St. James Elementary in Thunder Bay Ontario, Sir Matthew Begbie Elementary, and Vancouver Technical Secondary. I've kept an active brain by dabbling in occasional online training but the majority of my skills come from a lot of self-teaching, combined with a lot of foul language. My English teachers would cringe. The thought of higher education didn't particularly excite me back then. I felt I'd had just about enough of school and not nearly enough cash but I haven't ruled out further formal education. Despite the fact that I'm already collecting my pension, I've been thinking about a return to school a lot lately. Some college courses are free now, after all. My other school is the great School of Life and honestly, a huge contributor to who I am today. My favourite season is summer, by far. I enjoy watching sports on TV but, when I can manage it, live and in person is the best. CFL is my passion and has been for about 55 years. It almost hurts to say that out loud. I've been living in a nice heritage neighbourhood full of 100+ year old homes in a former railway town in the East Kootenay for the past 40 years and have come to love it there. Nestled near the foot of the Rockies in a place known for having the most sunshine hours in BC (along with Victoria), what's not to like? The scenery is spectacular, summer nights are long and sultry, especially when one's butt is parked in the sand by a lake or lounging in a boat on the water. I do still miss the ocean and Vancouver itself but I get back often enough. The hardest part of living away is living away from my family. ay and continues to maintain its size. I'm now looking forward to becoming a grandmother but our daughter insists it won't be any day soon. As the British say, "Pity." Though times were lean, I was able to stay home, relishing my motherhood and every aspect of our child's growth. Not everyone can have that life and I never took it for granted. Without a diploma or degree, I didn't pursue a career, I pursued a living. I did a variety of things when employed. Clerical work, cocktail waitress at live music venues, courier driving, newspaper stuffing & delivery, child care, accounting assistant in a private CGA practice, night freight billing, artist and entertainer event planning, more newspaper in classifieds entry and reception. When you tire of one thing, you go on to the next interesting-sounding opportunity. It's been said that variety IS the spice of life. Beyond that, I did a whole lot of volunteering in a whole lot of ways via work associations and through my child's schools. My journey thus far has been comprised of many bumpy roads leading to a few forks of indecisiveness, many poor decisions, a few uphill climbs resulting in frightening falls, short feasts and long famines, epic fails, depression, and sadness. However, there have also been a plethora of smooth sailings, spot-on navigation, mirror-calm waters, many needs met, and feeling on top of the world with indescribable elation. That's the School of Life that has contributed to who I am today and I wouldn't change a thing, bad or good. The slightest ripple in time throws everything off and I would turn down every invitation to change even just one tiny aspect of my life to date, as I'm perfectly content being situated exactly where my destiny has placed me..
