Marguerite's Story

Hello class of 1966 and 1967. I spent two years at Notre Dame, the first as a boarder at Metcalfe St. and then at Campnille Campus on Heron Road. I was a day student in my repeat of grade 12. I had to make up for no 'New' Math or French for the previous three years due to living in Iqaluit, Nunavut (Frobisher Bay back then). After ND, I attended St. Pat's College and Carleton from 1967-1971. I studied Soc.,Psyche, and Lit. In my final year, I married Rick King. We moved to Toronto, and I started a 10 year career with the Royal Bank of Canada. I had been a loans officer to small business when I left there in 1980. During my uni summers, I worked for the CBC in Iqualuit and Ft. Churchill, Manitoba as a radio announcer/operator. It was a five year love affair. However, when it came to full time work, I lacked the confidence to break into the Toronto radio scene. So, I chose banking instead. Rick and I divorced in 1975. We had no children. It was an amicable parting, and we kept in touch for many years. Four years later I met my husband, Michael Baker while working at RBC Commercial Banking Centre in Mississauga. Mike, had been an engineer working for Shawinigan had recently transferred from Montreal. He had approached the RBC for a mortgage. The mortgage officer was away at the time so I loaned him the money. During the next two years, we became an 'item', and eventually I moved in with Mike and a year later, in 1982, we migrated to Brisbane, Australia,me here we now live. Mike started his own engineering business here while I was a marketing manager for a trading bank. I enjoyed my colleagues and the clientele and the interstate travel, but after two years we decided to start a family. Our biggest joy (and challenge) was to raise our two boys, Andrew and Matthew. Andrew is 29, a Quantity Surveyor living and working in London, UK; and Matt, 28 is a Chartered Accountatnt living, and working in Brisbane. Both boys are 'people' people, and are a joy to be with, when we see them. Fortunately, we have been able to travel back to Canada frequently to see family and friends. Last year, I took Mike on a 'Maggie tour' of my Ottawa student days. I was shocked to find that the old Metcalfe St. ND had been pulled down and replaced with Bell Canada's building. I wasn't shocked the building was pulled down, as it was partially 'condemned', when we were there, but I was shocked that there was no remnant of the old girl. I mean, not even a plaque or something. Such is the modern world! No respect for antiquity! LOL While our boys were growing up, I went back to uni and completed a degree in Journalism and business, and also did a post grad course as a Cambridge University external student, in English as a Second Lnguage. I only do volunteer work in those areas, but not too much of late. I have done volunteer work with schools and Meals on Wheels, and the odd project, such as when we had the 2011 floods. I started a charity with my wonderful neighbour's called Street Heart, and we adopted a flooded street in Ipsw...Expand for more
ich and raised enough money to provide complete Christmas dinners and presents for 30 families. After the flooding subsided, (75% of our state of Queensland was under water in January of 2011) we held our Christmas party that year in a park in their neighbourhood, two weeks before Christmas. It was a great day. Since Mike's retirement, we have spent a fair bit of time travelling around, which makes it difficult to be on a regular roster for any volunteer work. So, I do the odd project when they come up. We have to go so far to see our older son, so we take the time to visit with Mike's English relatives, and my family and friends who live from one side of Canada to the other. We especially enjoyed a Canadian summer last year (2015). My two sisters and I drove from London, Ontario to Buffalo to see the Rolling Stones, or the Strolling Bones! Well, what can I say...once a rocker, always a rocker! I actually am not a RS fan, but it was a fun thing to do with my sisters, who are. This year, we did a six week road trip through North and South islands of New Zealand. All I can say, is that is a fabulous place to visit! The folks are friendly, the roads are a pleasure to drive, and it's a little bit of Canada, all compressed into the South Island, featuring grassland prairies, glaciers, lakes and quaint seaside villages. Great walking tracks and the food is yummy, too. If you are ever down that way, you just have to hop across the pond over to Australia. It's a country the size of Canada, but for the most part very different, starting with the climate. That's why we're here. My husband of some 30 years is a 'refugee' from the cold. He just couldn't take the Canadian winters. He's such a wus, eh! Canadians and Australian have this 'love affair' thing going, where each country regards the other as a long lost cousin. It's just such a great place to visit, with unique flora, fauna and further, getting around is easy. That more or less sums up 50 years! I feel that I have been blessed with a very fortunate life. It hasn't all been roses, but I feel I've been Blessed. I've met some wonderful people, travelled to exciting places and I still have my health. I exercise during the week in an effort to keep up with my husband who is five years older than me. I swear he was a gazelle in a previous life! I'd love to hear from anyone from ND, and especially Luanne O'Keefe and Dianne Cooley (Dooley) my 'old' partners in 'crime'. Also, if anyone has any info on my favourite English Teacher, Sr. Catherine, aka, Sr. Nancy Hawn, (1965-1967). I owe Sr. Nancy Hawn my sanity, and also my long love of literature. I sincerely hope life has been kind to her. She was a wonderful teacher. Thank you for taking the time to read this. Cheers and Blessings Marguerite (Maggie). PS. I was only ever called 'Marguerite' by the ND Sisters. When I was called Marguerite, I knew I was in trouble! I was always called Margot at home. At Marguerita Hall, the boarders started to call me Maggie, and the name has stuck to this day.
