Maria's Story
What's the wildest thing you ever did in school?
I wore green jeans to my grade 13 final exam when only pantsuits, skirts and dresses were allowed.
I really thought that I would get caught and be sent home without getting to write the exam and then fail
the subject (can't remember what exam I wrote that day.) MY HOW TIMES HAVE CHANGED!!
My first job was at Emery Drugs, where I my start pay was 85 cents/hour and increased to $1.00/hr.
What I remember most about it is that I innocently sent Christmas cards to my Jewish bosses. Doesn't everyone celebrate Christmas? LOL
Besides the Russian Club (which my kids laugh heartily over), I remember that I took home all of the chorus girls'
costumes for "Finnian's Rainbow" (I still play the song on piano and sing it from time to time.) The costumes
were a disaster and I spent a few long nights ripping out miles of terrible tight stitches and re-sewing the tops and
skirts so that they would fit properly and could be worn as Reversible for the different scenes, ( just like Mr. Holmes would say: TO MAKE THEM RGHT.)
I was terribly disappointed to discover that my name was missing from the pr...Expand for more
ogram for costumes. I don't remember
even seeing the Home Ec. Teacher in the room during our sewing nights. She took full credit. [Bella Rob! as one
would say in Italian ] In hindsight, I should have tried out for Chorus, seeing as I had belonged to Three Choirs at my Elementary School during my Graduation Year.
After Year One University at Victoria College U of T, I completed teacher training and have spent the next 3+ decades
teaching Elementary children; a vocation which I still heartily enjoy because of the Shear Joy that kids display when they discover something new, or reach their potential. The opportunity to exercise creativity while integrating Music, Art, Theatre, Improv, Humour and a variety of emotions, make it exhilarating to share with the younger generation;
they hold the hope of our civilization into the future.
Before I retire, it would be so COOL and Uplifting to hear from many of the thousands of students I've taught over the years. I've been working on my website: [ 2MsWithLove.com ] to welcome and invite as many former students as possible, to post notes about their lives and memories of Elementary school.
