Marian's Story
Life
Since graduation, I've pretty much settled down into manufacturering as a production worker. It's an honest living but after 19yrs of it I found myself wanting to shift gears and go a different direction. In 1994 I was suddenly widowed and spent the next couple of yrs trying to decide what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. In 1999 I married Michael Callaghan, he's a native of London England. By this time I had decided that I wanted to go back to school and relocate. So in 2003 Mike and I moved to Mesa AZ Where I attended Apollo College in their medical assisting program. I just wanted a whole new start in life, I wanted a career and a different place to live. Michael gave me all that and I am at a very good place right now. I'm very happy living in Mesa with my new love and working in a satisfying job. I choose the medical field because I wanted my life to mean something and wanted to make a difference.
College
The college that I went too didn't have dorms so I had no roommates. The course I took (Medical Assisting) was only a 9 month course which was a good thing that way it gets you to work faster. It's more or less a crash course to get your foot in the door of the medical field. My training, however continues on, even the ...Expand for more
learning. Since college I've had to take learning courses along the way such as "Injections" learning how to give them, where to give them and updated techniques. I am also scheduled next month for another training lesson in "Vaccines" learning about them, their purpose and all the new ones that have come out.
Apollo College was a fun experience for me and I loved every bit it. I poured my heart & soul into it.
In 2004 I graduated and took my RMA exam and past. I am now a registered medical assisting.
Workplace
I was hired as a back office float in 2005 at East Valley Pediatrics. We have offices all over the valley and we have now been in our new office since Christmas. We now have 5 doctors just in our office alone. I have sifted gears once again but with in the company. I was offered another position working more or less behind the scenes. I am responsible for all referrals to specialists and prior authorizations for all kinds of outpatient procedures. This position believe it or not keeps me quit busy. I still do a little medical assisting when our MA's need some help or when we're short staffed. I prefer my position as Referral Coordinator over back office work. However, I pretty much can fill in where ever is needed to get the job done.
