Marian's Story

Life I lived in the Houston Metropolitan area since 1956. I moved to a home on Lake Livingston, which is 85 miles north of Houston. It is really a great spot and reminds of me Ohio with its rolling hills and trees, trees, trees! The many birds including ducks and geese winter in the area and of course some stay all year around. My 3 chihuahuas and my son's miniature dachshund (when he comes to visit) have a ball with the pine cones. My lungs don't know how to react to sweet fresh air on a daily basis since they have been used to all the pollution for so long! The end result has been that I no longer need allergy meds or an inhaler--except when I go to Houston for more than a couple of days! I have been living here at the lake for over 4 years now. I never thought that I would ever leave the city, but had I realized how much I would enjoy it, I would have made the move a long time ago! I went back to Newark several years ago--before the move up here. After a 3 month stay, April-June. I decided it was just tooooo cold for me to be comfortable. I returned for a 2 week visit with my family in Oct 2004. My 23 month old granddaughter and her mother came with me. My daughter-in-law had never been to Ohio and she was really interested in the area. We went to Longabergers and up to the Amish country. We came in October because she had just seen pictures of the fall foliage in the north. I was so happy that nature cooperated and she was busy taking pictures. Holly, our baby girl was thrilled at the pumpkin patch. They came back home after a week and Holly was very upset that Nannie didn't go with her. She stayed unhappy all the way to Houston. Geneva, her mother, was thrilled when they touched down at Bush airport. (I bet all the other passengers were happy, too!) She didn't make a peep on the way up. I am seriously thinking about driving home this summer. I have made that trip before and had a great time. I just had my older pup with me then and this time it would be with two. Tuffy is a great traveler, but Ruffy is not as good. Hopefully, he will be better by then. He loves to ride sitting on the cushion I have behind by back braced on my shoulders--that might get a little tiring over that distance. (He just weighs 4 lbs.) I finally found a company in Chicago that had "escape proof" harnesses for the little bitty ones, but he doesn't really like it,however, I must make sure he is secured. They keep me company and the only drawback is that I have to eat fast food while we are on the road because I won't leave them alone. There is no problem with motels since many are pet friendly. Since I have no time constrictions we travel as far as we want and then stop to rest or spend the night. I am starting to get more excited about the adventure just writing about it. The remodel of my house is not finished YET, so I think a change of scenery would be great. Another advantage of retirement and being able to make up my mind as to just what I want to do when. It has been a much colder winter than what we are accustomed to having, but not as bone chilling as the winter has been in Ohio this year. I am really hoping that the weather up there will be good in Sept..- I did make the trip, and had a great time. The next year was quite a tumultuous one. My oldest son came to visit with me and suffered a very traumatic life threatening situation, but was recovering nicely. He insisted that I make the trip home that summer as I had planned. ove us back. I was ready to come home after about 2 weeks there, so another niece, Ellen, drove back with me. She had always wanted to come to the Lone Star State, so she had a great time--even wading in the Gulf. She had as much fun as a 6 yr old! Of course, she was happy to get to visit with the cousins she had not seen since early childhood. Neither one of us drive at night when we are out on the road, so we stopped twice. Of course, we also stopped many times along the way to stretch our legs and let the pups run. Ruffy turned out to be a fine little companion. I lost my oldest son within a month of returning home--quite suddenly and unexpectedly--having nothing to do with his prior problem. This came from enjoying a tasty lunch of oysters on the half shell. Yep, he got some that were harboring vibrio, which is a rare and deadly bug. It has taken me the better part of this past year to get back on my feet from that. Actually, I am still working on it daily. During the past 2 yrs, I have been fighting with my right foot--first a broken bone in the ankle, then a broken toes, then a broken bone in the lower part of the sole and now 3 stress fractures in the upper part of the foot. So I am back in a boot, working hard to get it to heal--not really clumsy--just a weak ankle--so the doc says. In the meantime, I have added a little girl chihuahua to my family. She gets along well with the other two. They are all very distinctly different, both in type and size, but all have sweet personalities. A similar comment that I have made about my sons! So now I have Tuffy a blond applehead--12lbs, Ruffy who is black and white--4lbs, and Shady Lady light brown/white deer, weighing in at almost 13lbs. Quite a menagerie. We also have 4 turtles that my son has caught--from the size of a quarter to 3" across. No more animals of any type. We fared well with Hurricane Ike--a lot in the community did not. We didn't lose any trees. The only ones we have ever lost were the 2 pear trees in the backyard! A big ole beaver took it upon himself to cut them down! I just wish he would learn to cut about a foot closer to the ground! One squirrel has decided that my front porch is the perfect place for him to eat. I wouldn't mind that if he would throw the parts of the pine cone that he doesn't want off the side instead of right outside my door! At least he is no longer ringing my door bell! Apparently the plastic is not as tasty as he thought it might be especially since he always thought it would make a tasty breakfast shortly after sun up! I haven't decided whether I am going to make the trip home this next summer or if I am going to get a golf cart. They are the mode of transportation here in Governor's Point. Heck--who knows--by then I may decide to do both. Just have to wait and see, I guess. It will probably depend on how well the foot comes along. Oh well, we still have the winter to think about it. I did decide to get the golf cart and it is a lot of fun. My 2nd son, Eric, had a massive coronary on Nov. 18th, so I didn't make a trip home last year. Hopefully I will be able to go north for a couple weeks this summer (2009). In the meantime, Eric and I have decided to try our hand with a flower bed--he has kept his brother's plants doing well, so hopefully we can do the same with some different types of plants. Green thumbs we aren't, but we are certainly trying! At least, we are supporting Lowe's garden shop! Maybe the Miracle Grow will help us as it does in the commercials!
