Marian's Story

After graduation day from CAHS in 1971, I started Slippery Rock State College as a Health and Physical Education Major. I graduated in June 1974, got married and earned a graduate assistantship at the University of South Florida. I graduated with a Masters degree in Phys. Ed. for the Handicapped in June 1975 and gave birth to my first son, Michael in August 1975. I lived in York, PA where I became an adjunct professor for Penn State, York campus. I left Penn State to find a permanent job with Allison Chalmers as a lab technician where I began my programming career. I was divorced and raised Michael as a single mother until I decided to move back home in 1980. I found a programming job aT Westinghouse in Penn Center, which was one of the nuclear technology departments. We tracked the work being done on the nuclear plants Westinghouse was building at the time. I went back to school at Pitt to take some computer science classes and Westinghouse sent me to classes outside of work. This is where I met my current husband, Peter. We married in 1983. Peter was laid off in 1984 and he went to Pitt to get his MBA degree in 1985. Peter then got a job working at Newport News Shipbuilding in 1985 a...Expand for more
nd we moved to Yorktown, VA. Alex was born in 1986 and I was a stay at home mom until Alex began pre-school. I became an adjunct professor at Christopher Newport College teaching Health and Phys. Ed. to Junior and Senior Health and Phys Ed majors. I also taught Computer Science. I volunteered teaching at Alex’s schools both Health and Phys. Ed. and Computer technology. We moved to Calvert County, MD in 1992, where Peter got a new job working for Baltimore Gas and Electric. Michael graduated HS and Alex entered 1st grade. I received a job as a contractor/programmer working with the Resolution Trust Company. Then I got another programming job in 1995 working for the Federal Reserve Board in Washington, D.C. I decided to leave D.C. in 2015 and moved back to PA. My husband and I began renovating our house in 2014 and just finished our last big project this year 2020. I officially retired from the FRB January 1, 2019 and have been enjoying every minute of my retirement. Peter and I recently moved to TN and are learning about cattle farming. I hope to see many friends from CAHS at our 50th Reunion next year, Sept. 17-18, 2021. Hopefully, we will be able to share our memories without worry.
