Marianne Brorup's Story

It bears noting I attended five different high schools starting out in Copenhagen, Denmark so my attachment to RMSS is probably not as strong as some. I left South Porcupine and RMSS for Ontario College of Art in 1969, and ended up at the Eaton Design Group which kick started a 7 year career as an interior designer in Toronto. Married Alan Weston and moved to BC in 1978. Had four kids, became a childbirth artist and activist and when the kids started growing up, threw myself into community theatre ... acting and mostly directing plays and traveling to festivals all over BC. At the turn of the century (that sounds epic!), I got involved with Indigenous theatre, and today am the Artistic Director of a tiny theatre company, The Raven Collective. Check us out on line by googling Bunk 7. I also work as a consultant to First Nations, developing proposals and writing grants for arts & culture, community projects, housing, social justice and tourism. My husband and I live in northwest BC, outside Terrace in an WWII Canadian air force duplex with our cat Hank. Our eclectic home is furnished partly with set pieces from all the plays I designed and directed. Our kids are all in BC, and th...Expand for more
ree live near us with their kids which add up to 15 grandchildren. And no, I do not babysit them - too busy living my own life. But they are always welcome to drop in, which they regularly do. I am still very connected to my Danish roots. I speak, read and write my language fluently, and practice on my almost blind 96 year old mom by reading HC Andersen aloud to her. My best memories from RMSS are my art teacher Priscilla Hutchings, and taking charge of most prom decorating event. I also remember meeting Gov Gen Roland Michener himself. And once being accused (wrongly) by an art adjudicator of copying my submission to an art contest, and being hauled in to Mr Webb's office to explain myself. which I did, and I got first place once I set that pompous adjudicator in his place. I remember when Mr Baker was tragically killed, and how weird it was receive the scholarship in his honour when I graduated. I don't remember having any best friends really, except for Jan (Wyman/ Wyborn?) Larouche. I was friends with Ron van Leeuwen (who also went to OCA), and Billy Sherman tutored me in math, the only subject I was failing in. I recall camping with Ann Roberts and Peggy Mackay one summer.
